[May 3] [Noli Me Tangere, Baccano!, Naruto] The Benefits of Amnesia
Title: The Benefits of Amnesia
Day/Theme: May 3rd, I love you when I forget about me
Series: Multi-fandom (not crossover) – Noli Me Tangere, Baccano! Naruto
Rating: PG
Character/Pairing: Elias/Salome, Isaac/Miria, Naruto/Hinata, Kabuto/Shizune
Notes: Four ficlets, separate from each each other, and not connected in any way at all. The theme was just so wonderful, it inspired all these. ^_^
the crime of loving is forgetting
Elias/Salome
Whenever he could find the occasion to, he comes to see her, even when he knows the foolishness of these visits. He had only a doomed future to give her, and a lifetime of torment; a life like the one his mother and his sister once had. But the visits are a source of solace to him, and even to her—a fact that had always been a wonder to him.
And here, in front of her hut, while he talks to her as she does her sewing, he has to struggle to remember everything—his grim past and equally grim future, if he has a future to begin with—and not allow himself to say anything that will only cause both of them more grief—I love you, I love you, you know that is the truth, and other things. He cannot allow himself to simply be happy in her presence, because it was a fleeting happiness, ephemeral, something he cannot hold on to forever.
But he always comes back to her, even so. For even he sometimes had the need to forget; and she understands this, and waits for him, day by day by day.
forget and forgive
Isaac/Miria
“I’m never going to talk to you again, Isaac!”
“Me too, Miria!”
“I hate you, Isaac!”
“I hate you too, Miria!”
“I’ll be leaving right this very instant, Isaac!”
“Me too, Miria! Why, I think we should leave together, since we’re both leaving anyway!”
“That’s a great idea, Isaac! You are a genius!”
“Yes, yes, I am, Miria!”
“Well, I’m looking forward to our trip. Where are we going?”
“To Europe. Italy, maybe. Or France! We can eat lots of French fries there!”
“Yay! French fries…!”
“…”
“…”
“Isaac?”
“Yes, Miria?”
“We were fighting a while ago, weren’t we?”
“Why yes…I think we were, Miria.”
“What were we fighting about?”
“I…actually don’t know, Miria.”
“Then we probably weren’t, after all. I wouldn’t dream of having a fight with you!”
“Me too, Miria!”
“I love you so much, Isaac...!”
“I love you too, Miria. Forever and ever.”
the self lives by getting and forgetting
Naruto/Hinata
Despite her resolve to be stronger, and the many hours Hinata had spent in training, Hinata constantly lived in fear. Fear of the futility of her efforts, and of an inevitable, unchangeable (unforgiving) destiny. She could never forget the look on her father’s face when Hanabi had beaten her that last time: that look of sheer disappointment and anger—but not of surprise. It was as if he had entirely expected that outcome, and had only clung on to a desperate hope that she could prove him wrong. But she could not, back then, and probably could never do so, ever.
You are a failure, just as we thought. You are hopeless.
You cannot hope to change.
She saw that same look on Neji now, that same look of disgust and condescension at her (foolish, foolish) attempts to change herself. Slowly she found herself believing his words, believing what her father once thought of her, something she had never forgotten, even after all this time—
“Stop deciding things about people, idiot! Stand up for yourself, Hinata!”
Hinata had been startled at those words. At that moment, she had forgotten her fears entirely, and even what her father had once thought of her—all these seemed strangely distant, and irrelevant. Only her determination remained in her mind, and her desire to be stronger and braver under adversity, to be just like him.
“Thank you,” she whispered before turning to face Neji in battle, “Thank you, Naruto."
love consists in forgetting
Kabuto/Shizune
“I hate you,” she said with venom. “Make no mistake about that—”
“Why are you so vehement about it, then?" he asked with a sneer. "I never said anything to the contrary.”
Shizune flushed, with anger, and sudden embarrassment, which she tried to suppress in vain. “What happened just now was a mistake, a sign of extreme stress because of the circumstances we are in now—”
Kabuto looked at the stones that had walled them in, trapped them inside the small cave. “Our only hope of rescue is from the outside world,” he said, ignoring her. “We’ll see who’ll get here first—aid from my side, or yours.”
“I hope Tsunade-sama gets here first,” she said. “And then there’ll be no hope of escape for you.”
He grinned. “Have you no pity for the man you just shared a kiss with?”
"You--" She stood up and glared at him, ready to strike. “I should kill you now because I’m sure you’ll let Orochimaru know about this, and you’ll somehow use it to your advantage—”
“Please,” he said coldly. “I have no desire to even remember what happened. We just forgot ourselves, that was all. Even I’m not proud of it.” Shizune relaxed, but only very slightly. “Now let’s just sit down and wait for help to come.”
“I don’t like this,” she groaned. “I feel so useless. And I just had to be stuck here with you, damn it.”
Several minutes passed in agonizing silence, and it was all Shizune could to still remain calm.
“You know,” Kabuto said with small smile that foretold of unpleasant things to come, “you do have to admit that it least what we were doing earlier helped pass the time.”
“No,” Shizune said. “Not again—”
He cupped her face in his hands, and smiled at her. “I won’t breathe a word of this anyone,” he whispered.
She stopped struggling after several moments. “Don’t think,” she said quietly, "this means I love you or anything.”
“That’s all right,” he said. “Love is for equals. We’re not.”
“Yes,” she murmured. He leaned over to kiss her, and she closed her eyes—
--and punched him full in the face.
As he collapsed on the floor, she beamed down at him, her mood suddenly lifting.
“We’re not equals,” she said. “Because I think you’re beneath me.”
