[May 3] [Beetlejuice] On a Lower Setting
Title: On a Lower Setting
Day/Theme: 3. I love you when I forget about me
Series:Beetlejuice
Character/Pairing: Juno, Beetlejuice/Lydia
Rating: PG
It was hard to tell how much of his performance was, in fact, an act. He had existed long enough and was powerful enough to have developed such an ego, but there was a desperation to it that you had to have known him a long time to see. There were only a few people left in the world or underworld that did. Juno was one of them.
She knew that if he knew she was watching, he would put on a show. He did love an audience. She had seen it before though. She wanted to see the more recent developments.
He was still teasing the human girl. Living girl, she corrected herself. We were all human once. Even him. He would’ve called it tormenting, but it had become teasing, and the sad-eyed child was learning to tease back. And when no one was around to see it, no one to shock or disgust or frighten, the teasing gentled to a real conversation. Girl and ghost chatted like friends, almost flirted.
It was easy to like him when he wasn’t on full blast. Juno remembered what that had been like before. It was a relief to see that part of him was still there. When he forgot that he was terrifying and powerful, when he forgot that the girl was a pawn in his plot, he could remember how to be human and what it was like to feel human emotions again. When he wasn’t a rampaging spirit bent on escape and destruction, he could be the layer underneath, the one you had to have seen before to recognize, a desperate spirit who had always had what he really needed kept out his reach.
At least this time, Juno thought, fading away before he could become aware of her and ruin the moment by groping the poor child or anything that would put on a show. It looks like he has a chance of getting it.
