[2 May][Hikaru no Go] Stones in Narrow Spaces 2/?
Title: Stones in Narrow Spaces 2/?
Day/Theme: May 2 / Hearts have a past that must be reckoned
Series: Hikaru no Go
Character/Pairing: none
Rating: General
---------------
Over the years, Shindou had built up a minor reputation as an antiquarian, though it was a reputation that astonished those who were more familiar with the harum-scarum side of his personality. Antique dealers occasionally requested his help in identifying or certifying pottery or paintings--he was known to have made a study of Heian-era artefacts in particular--but old gobans and other Go paraphernalia were his areas of expertise.
At Touya Kouyo's birthday last year, Shindou had presented him with a beautiful antique goban rumoured to have been used by Shuusaku. Most gobans of such provenance were in the Shuusaku Museum in Innoshima, but Shindou somehow had one in his possession.
Touya Kouyo had been overwhelmed by the gift and tried to return it, saying that surely it was something that Shindou himself valued. Shindou had said, without a trace of self-consciousness, that what he valued was that this goban had a worthy player such as Touya Kouyo.
Touya Kouyo was not to know that after leaving the dinner gathering, Shindou had gone home and sat all night in front of his own goban, the white stones laid out opposite his black in anticipation of an opponent who would never materialise.
