"I sense a disturbance in the Force."

Ignoring for a second the crowded scene that had appeared in front of their eyes the moment they stepped out of the lift, Touya turned and gave Shindou an incredulous look. "Did you just quote Star Wars at me?"

Shindou did not do anything obvious, such as raising his eyebrows, but the corners of his mouth stretched a fraction wider in a smirk, the version he usually showed before a goban. "Don't you think it's appropriate?"

"I give up," Touya said, though he did not mean the sentiment. Shindou, he had come to know over the years, had a talent of saying exactly the right things at the wrong time, while Touya had found in himself a propensity to make declarations that he did not necessarily believe in. ("He's not my rival!" was one of the earliest examples.)

"Let's go," Shindou said, and they went forward together.

The crowded scene that had prompted Shindou's initial comment parted unwillingly as they came nearer, while murmurings of their names drew the attention of the occupants in the Go salon, not to mention the uniformed police officers also seated within. It did not escape either Touya or Shindou's attention that the crowd comprised mainly of customers and curious onlookers.

Ichikawa, who was seated with one of them at the far end of the salon, looked up in as Touya identified himself to the officer at the door. It seemed as though she flushed, either in relief or embarrassment, and stood up at the sight of them. "Akira-kun!" she said, approaching them. "I've been trying to reach you. Your father-"

"Father and Mother are still in Taipei," Touya said.

Ichikawa nodded, whether in acknowledgement or resignation, it was hard to tell, though up close, they could see the frustrated look in her eyes. It was clear that she was at the end of her patience. "I couldn't reach them, and your phone-"

Chagrined, Touya checked his pocket and extracted the silver-coloured gadget from it. Switched off, of course. "My apologies, I had a game just now," he said, rectifying the oversight immediately by pressing the 'on' button. He disliked putting his phone on silent mode.

"Shindou-kun, you're here too," Ichikawa said. "Good, I was about to call you next."

"What happened?" Touya asked.

Ichikawa said in a rush, "Your father's goban has been stolen."
