[May 1] [The 10th Kingdom] Not Ready.
Title: Not Ready.
Day/Theme: 1. Hey-ho, let's go!
Series: The 10th Kingdom
Character/Pairing: Wolf/Virgina
Rating: PG
“Ready?” Wolf asked, poking his head into her shelter. His eyes were as wide as his grin. The better to catch you while you’re changing, my dear, Virginia thought irritably. She didn’t get a chance to answer because he was already talking again. “You have to be ready! The sun is gold and the mist is silver and every dewdrop holds a rainbow! All it needs to be perfect is the form and fragrance of the girl of my dreams! Come quick before it burns away.”
“It can wait five more minutes, and so can you,” she grumbled, pulling her cover over her head and then sitting up when she realized that it was his coat. He had been cold all night so she could have it. Her heart softened for a whole five seconds before its guardian hissed that it just meant he had been sneaking in here while she was asleep to give it to her. Who knows what else he had done while he was at it. Her eyes went icy, but her glare didn’t faze him at all.
“I will wait for you forever,” he said fondly. “But when the mist is gone it will be easier for the Huntsman to follow our trail. And a sprinkling of dew drops are the only diamonds I can adorn you with. For now.”
She got to her feet as quickly as she could, fear of the Huntsman burning through her anger like the sun would the mist. The mixture of outrage, embarrassment, and pleasure that his love-doviness always put her through made her avoid his adoring eyes as she handed his coat back to him. He took it, but only to wrap it around her shoulders for her.
“Now you’re ready,” he said, and she wanted to argue. She wasn’t ready for any of this. Not to be in another world, not to run through a fairy tale forest with an insane archer out to kill them, and certainly not to face Wolf or the emotions he brought to life. “Let’s go!”
His obsession was starting to be contagious though. Whatever he said, she interpreted it as a comment about ‘them’. Him saying ‘Let’s go’ wasn’t in reference to a plunge into a relationship with him, she reminded herself. Take him literally. Do not overlay any romance on him or you’ll end up as one-track-minded as he is.
He took her hand and she was so full of conflicting thoughts that she didn’t jerk it back. That was all the encouragement he needed to lead her out into the damp and silver-lit morning. It was beautiful, she allowed herself to notice. He thinks I’m this beautiful. He’s an idiot. A sweet idiot. Or just a sweet-talker. Can he really feel the way he says he does, or is he just saying what he thinks will get him something?
Her father was waiting for them by a stream. He raised an eyebrow at their clasped hands and Virginia would’ve pulled away in embarrassment, but Wolf was hustling her along too quickly.
“You two ready?” Tony asked.
“Utterly,” Wolf said. Virginia found herself very nearly blushing.
“No. I- I guess so,” she said. The three of them hurried into the trees. Virginia looked over her shoulder at the mist hiding their trail. She didn’t mind that. It was the fact that it hid the path ahead that left her so fearful. She was afraid to not see where she was going, especially when all she had to hold onto was as untrustworthy as Wolf was.
“I don’t mind you holding so tight,” he whispered suddenly. “But don’t worry. I won’t let go.”
