[Aug 01] [Carnivale] Untitled Chapter One
Title: Untitled Chapter One (I hope to have a complete fic by the end of the month)
Day/Theme: August 1/Be indomitable, o my heart
Series: Carnivale
Character/Pairing: Sofie, Brother Justin (no pairing)
Rating: PG content-wise, but pretty creepy
It was an instant wherein Sofie felt not quite herself. It seemed the longest pause possible, like the intake of breath before bad news, or the eerily calm air right after a dust storm. Or the last moment of her mother’s life, after she’d stopped screaming but before she’d died.
And after that she was watching herself through a very thick veil, almost a curtain. Only the most startling things reached her consciousness. Somebody was shot. There was the smell of blood, familiar blood, though that made no sense. And then someone was alive, who had not quite been.
An instant later she found herself horizontal, and could not remember anything. She was in a bed. Someone was sitting beside her with their back turned to her. A figure all in black.
Sofie couldn’t tell how she recognized Him from the very moment she opened her eyes. But she did—and it filled her with such fear that she dared not move. But already He knew she was awake. He turned, and a hand caught her wrist as though to stop her, though she hadn’t even been breathing.
“Take courage. It is I, be not afraid.” The hand about her wrist became more of a caress, and that chilled her bones all the more. On a wild impulse, she dared glance at his face. His eyes were dark as obsidian. “Why do you scream? My Sophia…”
Sofie hadn’t even known she was screaming. Her heartbeat raced like a wild animal. His fingers grazed her cheek. Her skin was cold under His touch.
“Blessed are we before all men, for unto us thou hast revealed these great exploits." There was a deep chuckle.
“What are you talking about?” Her voice shook. Why couldn’t she remember how she got here? What had he done to her?
“Why do you still tremble?” His face came down low to meet hers. Sofie blinked, and swallowed back another scream. “It came to pass then, when Pistis Sophia saw me shining most exceedingly and with no measure for the light which was about me, that she was in great agitation and gazed at the light of my vesture. She saw the mystery of her name on my vesture and all the glory of it—“
“STOP IT!!” Her whole body shook then, exorcizing a whole hour’s worth of trembling and screams in one moment. “Please stop,” she begged, though she knew it would do no good.
“Why do you still resist?” His voice was firmer now. “Even after all you have done for me. You have chosen, Sofie. You cannot go back.”
“Chosen what? What did I do?” Her voice was coming from somewhere deep inside her; she could not control it.
His smile was snake-like, and warm. “Why, you saved me, my Sophia. You brought me back from the very brink of the abyss. I knew you would not fail me…” His words became whispers as he leaned down to kiss her forehead.
And she fell, once again, into Oblivion.
