[Feb. 29] [Detective Conan] Support
Title: Support
Day/Theme: Feb. 29: ”Come give me my soul again.”
Series: Detective Conan
Character/Pairing: Ran, Heiji, Kazuha
Rating: R/M
Heiji was exhausted.
It just felt like everything was happening at once, and he was overwhelmed by it all. The only thing keeping him going most of the time was his legendary stubbornness. In short, he was too bull-headed to take a break or quit. And he was accustomed to pushing himself past his limits when the situation called for it. He did with school, kendo, and detective work.
But right now, even his limitless tenacity had reached its limit. He considered himself lucky to even make it to the available couch before his knees gave out and he dropped onto the cushions. His head lulled against the back of the couch. So tired…still, even as wiped out as he was, there was one person who he knew was more tired than he. And that person—
“Hattori-kun?”
—was apparently standing in the doorway.
With some effort, he lifted his head and looked up at the visitor. “You look as tired as I feel.”
Mouri Ran was leaning against the doorframe. She looked like hell, to be frank—she was pale, with dark circles under her eyes. Her usual smile was nowhere to be found, having been replaced by the saddest expression he had ever seen her sport. Her spirit was lacking.
This was all so hard on her, harder than anyone else. And she had taken on so much responsibility in acting as Kudo’s main support person. She said she was glad to do it, and it was no secret that she was doing it willingly for Kudo, but it was draining her.
She crossed the room, actually weaving a bit in the space of a couple meters. “Is there room?” she asked softly. Her words slurred slightly. “Just…want to sit for a while.”
Concern overrode exhaustion, and Heiji half-rose and reached out to take her shoulders and guide her to the couch and sit her down. “Sit,” he said shortly. “Good god, Neechan, you’re running yourself ragged! What are you doing?”
“I can’t stop,” she said, voice cracking. “Shinichi needs me…” Tears were welling in her eyes.
Heiji’s respect for the girl had already been extremely high—she was a good person, and one hell of a fighter. But he felt that respect grow as the first tear ran down her face. She was pushing herself to her breaking point for the sake of the man she loved, no matter how messed up he was. And even as she was visibly starting to fall apart, she wasn’t willing to admit that she needed to stop and rest. She would keep pushing herself far beyond what she could reasonably do.
“You’re not going to be able to help him if you make yourself sick,” he said. “Neechan, you need to take a break too.” As he said it, he realized something else—it was the first time he had noticed just how much they were all watching out for each other now. Neechan watched out for Kudo, and Heiji was now watching out for Neechan. He didn’t pause to wonder who was watching out for him.
“But—“
“Just get some sleep,” he said firmly. “Kudo will be fine for a few hours.”
She was too exhausted to argue any further. “Okay…” she murmured with a hiccup. She was still crying, both for exhaustion and helplessness and worry.
Taken by a sudden impulse, Heiji wrapped an arm around her shoulders and gave her a quick squeeze. “It’ll be okay. Don’t worry.”
He was only partially surprised when her head flopped onto his shoulder. Her breathing evened out quickly, and she was asleep in record time. It was a strange position, and not a level of closeness that they were really accustomed to. But it was certainly not unpleasant, and even if it was at all uncomfortable, Heiji wouldn’t have had the heart to wake her up.
Especially considering how tired he was himself.
Resigning himself to the situation as it was, he leaned his head carefully on Ran’s and closed his own eyes with the intention of trying to get at least a couple hours’ worth of sleep.
A short while later, Heiji heard footsteps walking into the room and sensed someone standing near him. There was a head on his shoulder, so he took care not to move, but cracked an eye open and looked around for the source of the noise.
Kazuha was standing there, watching them.
She stood there for a moment, and Heiji wondered if she would get upset. For whatever reason, she tended to get very worked up when any other women made any displays towards him—she claimed it to be the protective nature of an older sister, whatever that meant. And he and Neechan might have no romantic inclinations whatsoever towards each other, but they were certainly very cozy at the moment.
After a few seconds ticked by, she turned and wandered away again. Heiji was a bit bewildered, as it seemed an uncharacteristic move for her, but he closed his eyes and started to drift back to sleep…
Until the footsteps returned.
This time he didn’t bother to open his eyes, assuming that she had come back. But he did open one eye when he felt something fall over him—a blanket. And she was carefully draping another one over Neechan, who had yet to so much as twitch.
She straightened and noticed that he was watching her. One finger moved to her lips. “Shh,” she whispered with the smallest of smiles. “Go back to sleep.”
Too tired to question or argue, Heiji did as he was told. But as he obeyed and let the darkness come back over him again, he reflected that in spite of everything, he really was lucky to have her. She was the one who watched out for him.
