-------

It was hatred that drove him to survive, the first months after the massacre of his clan. It was hatred more than sorrow that spurred his young self to bear the pains of being an orphan in a world that looked upon his kind like some endangered creature of the wild, only good for their rare body parts.

It was hatred too, that let him survive the first year after the incident. The same hatred that turned into a vow of vengeance soon after he realized that nothing could be achieved by remaining alone in his beloved ghost village. It was hatred that forced him to leave his empty home behind.

It was hatred that made him react to every spider that he saw.

It was hatred that accompanied him to the Hunter Exam. This hatred simmered down with the added companionshiop of three others who were too bright and sunny to hate, but it never disappeared. It was hatred that brought him where he was, it was hatred that had brought him that far.

It was hatred that made him plunge through the lessons of Nen that he should have taken gradually through the years. It was hatred that made him impatient, made him itch to wrap his chain around the Spider's core to cut them from the very thing that made them powerful, not noticing the irony that he was using the same power to impose his justice on them. It was hatred that made him choose chains in the first place. It was hatred that pushed him to his limits, but it was never good enough. It was hatred that made him reckless. It was hatred that almost killed him.

Sometimes he wondered if his hatred wasn't enough, if his hatred had faltered at the thought of killing another human being. If his hatred was overwhelmed by his pride or compassion or morals or even principles.

He could never let go of that hatred, not when it had kept him alive all those years. Funny how something that threatened to snuff the life out of him and the people around him kept him breathing and pushing and surviving.

It was hatred. And nothing else.
