[Feb. 28] [Detective Conan] Going Home

Title: Going Home
Day/Theme: Feb. 28: "Time doth run with calm and silent foot."
Series: Detective Conan
Character/Pairing: Shinichi, Ran, Kogoro
Rating: R/M

It was strange to see sunlight that wasn’t coming through a screen or a pane of glass. And it felt extremely alien to wear clothing that didn’t consist of plain hospital garb…or thin, plain clothing that had been thrown to him in imprisonment. Ran had brought him jeans and a sweatshirt from his own wardrobe to wear for his trip home; with the scars marking his arms, he did not want to wear anything with short sleeves just yet.

After so much time in the hospital, being pieced back together physically and mentally, he was going home. The wounds to his body were more or less taken care of. But his mind and emotions were going to take a great deal longer to rebuild. But he had been deemed healthy enough to be released from the hospital into the loving arms of family and friends to continue his recovery at home.

As he walked through the front doors, the sunlight fell directly across his face. He instinctively put an arm up in front of his eyes and winced against the brightness. It was warm and cheerful.

Ran paused beside him. “Are you all right?”

He nodded. Speech continued to elude him, but he no longer trembled when anyone other than Ran came into his presence. So there was improvement. And someday, he would be able to speak again. As with everything else, it would take time.

Kogoro was waiting by the curb with the car. “Ready to go?” he asked. There was a pause as Ran opened the door to let Shinichi slide across the seat before climbing in behind him, and a moment later they pulled away from the curb. It wasn’t lost on Ran, though, that Shinichi didn’t move to the opposite side of the backseat, but sat in the middle of it, directly beside her.

Shinichi was lost in his own thoughts. His parents had come to him and told him apologetically that they had to return to their home in America for a while to make the necessary arrangements for an extended stay in Japan. He hadn’t heard much beyond that; he had mentally shut down at the time, interpreting the statement as a rejection.

Still, he assumed that Kogoro was going to take him to his own house and drop him off there. He’d lived in that house for years by himself before; it wasn’t a new experience. But he really didn’t want to be alone there right now. It was a big place, and he…

…suddenly, he wished Hattori hadn’t had to go back to Osaka. He would have been glad for his fellow detective’s loud, cheerful company for a while longer, at least until he settled back in. And it would have been hard to feel alone in that house with Hattori there.

Still, he was determined not to show his apprehension. He had made the decision that he would get better, and he would get back to normal. It wasn’t a good start to be afraid of being alone in his own house. He was just going to have to deal with it, and that was that.

Beside him, Ran watched him quietly. There was no conversation for the duration of the drive—one was driving, one could not speak, and one was content to sit quietly with her thoughts.

As the car came to a stop at the curb, Ran opened the door and slipped out onto the sidewalk before offering Shinichi a hand of assistance. He accepted and clambered over the seat and onto the cement…

And stopped in his tracks when he realized that they were standing not outside his house, but outside the Mouri Detective Agency. He had called this place home for the entirety of his charade as Conan. But why had they brought him here instead of—

He looked up at Ran, who recognized the question immediately. “Didn’t your parents tell you?” she asked. “They said they did. Rather than leave you alone in your house, we thought it’d be best if you stayed with us until your parents come back.”

Shinichi tried to remember the rest of the things his parents had said to him—was that part of it?

She glanced over her shoulder and saw that her father was already on his way up the stairs; apparently satisfied, she added in a conspiratorial whisper, “It was my dad’s idea.” She smiled. “You don’t have anything to worry about.” She wasn’t going to add that it kept him close to her for a little while longer, so she could continue to watch over him.

He felt a small smile tug at the corners of his mouth in response to hers. He still wasn’t sure how genuine his smiles were, all things considered. But she seemed pleased; she straightened to her full height and gestured towards the stairs. “Shall we?”

Shinichi hesitated, and then nodded. And together they walked up the stairs and went inside.
