[Feb 26] [Fables] Not Just a River in Egypt

Title: Not Just a River in Egypt
Day/Theme: Feb. 26 - "We deceive ourselves"
Series: Fables
Character/Pairing: Ambrose
Rating: PG

It wasn’t exactly a lie. The mirror couldn‘t lie. It just wasn’t the whole truth. And it was kinder, wasn’t it? What possible good would it do to tell him?

Maybe if they had told him the first time he asked, he would be over it by now, and they could stop lying. But they hadn’t. And now they couldn’t.

And the truth was that even though he asked, he already knew the truth. He didn’t want to accept it, so he took their half-truths and kind lies and told himself that that was the truth. And they went on that way for years upon years.

The mirror knew it couldn’t last. Cracks were appearing. It told itself that it was only trying to protect Ambrose, knowing very well that it was also trying to protect itself.

Ambrose knew it, too. He told himself that there was still hope. If the mirror couldn’t see his loved ones, then they could well be somewhere out there still, somewhere hidden from the Adversary, and also unfortunately, hidden from him. He didn’t let his thoughts stray to what he already knew, because he knew exactly why the mirror couldn’t see his family.

The mirror would have to tell him if it could see them, and it couldn’t, which could only mean that they were dead. That was the only place the mirror couldn’t see, and maybe it was the only way it could tell him. It said that it couldn’t find them, when everybody knew that that meant they were dead. Everybody, but Ambrose.

So it became the secret of everyone who knew him. And it was Ambrose’s own secret that he knew it too.
