Heiji sighed as he turned away from Kudo’s door for the third time that day. After his initial visitation attempt—in which he had nearly triggered an outright panic attack just from his presence—he had kept his distance for a lack of knowing what else to do.

He’d resolved to try again, thinking that sooner or later Kudo would realize that they were friends and so he wasn’t going to hurt him. But some little voice in the back of his head said that he was fooling himself and that it would be a very long time before they could act like normal friends again. And it was that voice that kept him from opening the door and making that next attempt.

Maybe later…maybe when Neechan was there? It would probably help. She had finally been torn away from the kid’s bedside and dragged home by her mother to get some rest and a decent meal. It had been a battle, to say the very least, but in the end poor Ran had just been too exhausted to keep up the argument. It’s hard to fight when every sentence is punctuated by yawns and your stomach keeps interrupting you by growling loudly enough to be heard in the next room.

With that plan in mind, Heiji started back towards the waiting room. That was the main hangout for most of the people who were hanging around the hospital for Kudo. He was sure that there would be at least a few others there.

He also wondered if his father was there yet—Megure-keibu had informed him that they had called down to Osaka with information on the explosive Black Organization case, and Hattori senior was making the trip to Tokyo for the case. Somehow, Heiji wasn’t looking forward to it.

As he came around the corner, he nearly ran into a man wearing the uniform of a police officer. Out of habit, he murmured an apology and continued on his way. It wasn’t until he’d gone another couple of steps that he realized he did not recognize the man. He glanced back over his shoulder, and saw that the officer seemed to be heading in the direction of Kudo’s room.

Well, maybe that wasn’t so suspicious. They’d been keeping a close eye on him ever since his arrival for fear that someone from the Organization might come after him. The Tokyo Metro Police were regular visitors to that room, both for the sake of Kudo’s safety and to see if there was any further information to be gained regarding his ordeal.

Still, it felt a little bit odd. Most of the officers who had been part of Kudo’s unofficial honor guard were the ones closest to Megure: Satou, Takagi, Shiratori, and Chiba were the main four, along with Megure himself. This was both because of trust and familiarity.

When he reached the waiting room, he was not surprised to find all five of the officers there. It seemed that they had just arrived, and Megure was saying something to Satou.

“Keibu,” he approached with a nod of greeting; the others returned it as he went on. “I was just wondering who that officer was that you sent to Kudo’s room. I’ve never seen him before.”

Megure looked startled. “I didn’t send anyone down there. The only ones I’ve been keeping on duty there are these four.” He gestured to his comrades, all of whom nodded.

There was a beat as everyone registered what was going on.

“…SHIT!” The curse tore itself from Heiji’s throat as he turned on his heel and sprinted back down the corridor towards the hospital room in question. He felt like a complete idiot for not having drawn the obvious conclusion, and if something happened to Kudo…
