[Feb. 25] [Detective Conan] Caught in the Moment

Title: Caught in the Moment
Day/Theme: Feb. 25: ”What are kings, when regiment is gone?”
Series: Detective Conan
Character/Pairing: Shinichi, Ran
Rating: R/M

It was incredible how things progressed.

When Shinichi had first woken up in the hospital after his imprisonment, still in his childish form and terrified of his own shadow, he had never dreamed that things would end up like this. He had never expected Ran to forgive his lies. He had not anticipated that she would still profess to love him. And he certainly had not figured on one of the police crime labs expressing an interest in finding an antidote to the apotoxin in lieu of further studying the drug.

And after all of that, he was himself, an adult once again. He was here with Ran in the way he truly wanted to be. Still, he couldn’t shake the fact that he felt like it was wrong. Shouldn’t she be with someone better, someone less tainted?

The one time he worked up his nerve and asked her that question, she took both of his hands carefully in hers and told him she wouldn’t have anyone else in the world.

It was tricky, though. There were times when he did not want to be touched, even by her, and even the slightest contact could set something off. And she would abstain, waiting until the moment had passed and he was all right again. There were moments when he would say nothing, but just lean his head on her shoulder. And she would put her arms around him, sensing his need for comfort and contact. And there were instances where she could kiss him.

It hadn’t been too long since that first shy kiss, after which he had found the voice to say something of the greatest importance to her. And she had stayed by his side. There had been a couple further kisses, very tentative explorations of new ground. He was still unsure, and she was certain but inexperienced.

They were taking things slowly. But there were still moments when she realized just how long she had waited for him and how much longer she might have to wait until he was wholly hers. It was depressing, though she vowed to stay steady and stay patient. And on occasion, her patience was rewarded by moments like these…

“Shinichi…” she murmured softly, again pressing her lips to his. His hand was in her hair, carefully cradling her head as she leaned into the kiss. He responded in turn, tilting his head and pressing her a bit closer. No one else could be this close; there was no one else he felt this safe with.

It was a bit more daring than they’d been before. The kisses had never inched this far, never deepened to this extent. And it was sweet, so sweet…enough that he was starting to wonder if maybe he was getting past what had happened. Maybe he was going to be okay—

Pain.

Shinichi froze as a flash of something rushed through him.

—hands grabbing at him—

He heard a sound.

—pressing everywhere—

In a blind panic, Shinichi surged backwards.

“Shin—“ Ran let out a small cry as he pushed her away and stumbled backwards. His back hit the closet door, and he stood there for a moment leaning heavily against it. She stood there, watching him with wide, confused eyes.

After a moment, he looked up and blinked at her as though seeing her for the first time. “R-Ran…” he said her name; it seemed alien on his tongue. And comprehension dawned on his face. “We were—did I really just—“

She could not answer.

The look on her face must have said what her voice momentarily could not, and he looked down at the floor. “I just…” He slid slowly down the wall to sit on the floor, looking for all the world like a lost puppy. “Ran, I…I’m sorry…” He put his face in his hands.

As the shock of the moment wore off, Ran moved to his side and dropped to her knees. “Shinichi,” she said his name, reaching out to put a tentative hand on his shoulder. He did not jerk away, which she took as a good sign, and so put her arms around him, pulling him to lean against her. “Shinichi, it’s okay.” She was surprised at how calm she truly felt. “It’s just not time yet.”

“How do you stand me?” he asked softly.

“You’re doing nothing wrong,” she replied. “I love you. And we’re going to get through this.” She leaned back and slipped her hands to his face, forcing him to look up at her. It was something she’d had to do a great deal over the last few weeks—when he hit moments like these, he would try to hide, and she would not let him. “We are going to get through this.”

She spoke with such conviction that Shinichi could only nod.
