[Feb. 24] [Detective Conan] Turning Pages

Title: Turning Pages
Day/Theme: Feb. 24: ”I cannot read and therefore wish all books burned.”
Series: Detective Conan
Character/Pairing: Shinichi, Ran
Rating: R/M

It was strange how much lighter things felt when Ran so much as walked into his room. He couldn’t get over the fact that she was not angry at him, and she was staying with him in spite of everything. She was the only person he truly felt safe around; as long as she was there, he was sure no one could hurt him. He wished desperately that he could speak to her…or even simply smile at her.

But smiles were something had not been able to muster up yet.

“How’re you feeling?” she asked, crossing to his bedside and putting a hand on his head.

Shinichi just nodded.

“I brought you something,” she said. “You’re going to be here for a while, so I thought you might like this?” She reached into her bag and withdrew a book—a much-worn, much-handled volume. “I picked this because I know it’s your favorite.”

He took it and looked down at it. The inscription across the front read The Sign of Four. His favorite Sherlock Holmes novel. Ran had remembered that. And it had been a while since he’d read this one, all things considered…

Unless…

“I can leave you to it, if you want,” she smiled, reshouldering her bag. “I just thought—eh?” She stopped in midsentence when he handed the book back to her with an earnest look. “You don’t want it?”

He waved a hand and pointed to the book, then pointed at her.

Ran watched, confused. But after a moment, it clicked. “Do you want me to read it to you?”

Shinichi nodded fervently. He seemed to withdraw a bit then, as though afraid she would say no.

Ran stared at him for a moment like she couldn’t believe what he was asking. Then she smiled and nodded. “Let me go get something to drink, and then we’ll start. Deal?” It was a childish request, and yet it had to be so difficult for him to ask in the first place.

He did not smile just yet, but his eyes lit up in a way she hadn’t seen in a long time.

It took her a mere minute to run to the nearest vending machine, and then she came back. There was already a chair beside the bed, one that had been used by various people keeping vigil over their little lost one. She took up her position there and opened the book. “Are you ready?”

He nodded, and she started to read aloud.

As she made her way through the first page, Shinichi shifted. He moved closer to the edge of the bed nearest her and curled up with his head pillowed on his arms. He closed his eyes and listened silently with the very smallest of smiles perched on his lips.

Ran glanced up as she turned a page, and nearly stopped reading when she saw that smile. But she kept on, though now she was wearing a smile of her own. It was such a blessed sight, given that it was the first time Shinichi had smiled since his rescue.
