They kept coming back. Asking for more. For all the real fear and the pretended manners and the grudging respect, they would’ve preferred to have nothing to do with her great-uncle. Necessary evil, she had heard one group mutter as they passed by without noticing her. As frightened and polite and respectful as they were, they were anxious to keep him on their side, doing their dirty work.
Why did he even bother when it was clear how very little he thought of them?
But whatever he thought of them, he put on his hat and coat, took his cane and went out to save them. And grudging or not, the respect was there. He had earned it with his work, just as he had earned the fear with the methods he used to get the job done. There were times, when she watched him go, that Courtney wondered what he might need from them that he put up with it.
