“So you just left when he fell ill?”

Driel rolled his lips between his teeth with hesitation; he decided chuckling through his answers wouldn’t be properly suited for what they were talking about. “It’s a bit more complicated than that but yes, I did.”

He watched Kayl furrow her eyebrows in a blend of frustration and confusion. “You spent two years away from home while your brother was dying?”

Driel felt his stomach flop in response to her tone of disbelief and he cracked his knuckles in response; it was his way of releasing inner tension. “Honestly,” he chuckled but he soon stopped when he saw the human girl shift uncomfortably in front of him. “I never said it was my brightest decision.”

Kayl fiddled with her fingers and Driel stopped himself from reaching over and stopping her nervous movements; he didn’t have to give her any more reasons to be disgusted with him. “Did... did you apologize once you came home?”

The fire dragon laid his hand on his forehead and sighed. “Actually, the first thing we did was fight.”

She tilted her head in confusion and asked, “You fought? Why in the world would you two do that?”

Driel snickered and ran his hand through his unruly red hair, feeling bitter about the memory. “Don’t ask me because it was his absolutely brilliant idea. He was downright furious in his typical calm manner. Though, even after two years apart, I still ended up winning as usual.”

Driel chuckled once again and noticed that the girl obviously didn’t share his humor; how could she though? Even though he was telling her about their history, he still left out some details; he hoped that Raz would fill her in later on. Kayl pushed a stray strand of hair behind her ear and gave him a shy, hopeful smile. “But you two patched things up after that right?”

Driel let out a smug laugh and shook his head in annoyance towards the past. “How could I apologize to the brother who joined the organization that shamelessly damned his father as a dirty traitor?”
