Series:Beetlejuice

“You really don’t have any shame do you?” Barbara asked in disbelief. “You’re not the least bit sorry.”

The poltergeist was industriously digging in his ear with his little finger and pretended that it had kept him from hearing her.

“It doesn’t even occur to you that were wrong to try to force a little girl to marry you? That it was low and despicable, and that you, yourself, are low and despicable for even thinking it? And how could you even consider showing your moldy face here after that??”

He tuned her out easily enough. She wasn’t the one he was here for anyway. It had taken a few years for him to find a loophole in his banishment, but it wasn’t too late. He hated ‘too late‘. As old as he was, he couldn’t stand to be ‘too late‘. He was dead, after all. He should have all the time in the world. The good news is that he wasn’t. It had only been a few years. The girl was still alive.

“-as far as you’re concerned, remorse is one of those little fish that follow sharks! And speaking of parasites-”

Beetlejuice let Barbara’s voice fade into the background again. He was willing to give the girl partial credit for getting him out of banishment. However, unfinished business nagged at the dead like an itch.

“She kept the ring,” he said suddenly, and the gravelly growl stopped Barbara’s tirade halfway through the third syllable of ‘degenerate’. “It’s the only physical thing left that I am bound to. I couldn’t have kept away if I had wanted to.”

“You!“ She sputtered for a word bad enough to call him. “You don’t even care how it’s going to hurt her to see you again! All those old fears resurfacing, wounds re-opening. And now, now you’re haunting her jewelry box??”

“If that’s where she keeps it,” he said, and his expression split into a leer.
