He didn’t enter the room immediately, but rather stood in the doorway simply to watch her move. He watched as she grabbed piles of her clothes, and haphazardly threw them into the suitcase. He could see the tissues from earlier, and where things had been tossed together in duffle bags and luggage. She didn’t even notice he was there, but rather focused solely on the task at hand- “How to get everything she owned packed away in the least amount of time possible.”

He wasn’t able to move, rather he just took in those last minutes of her. The hastily dressed way she stood, her hair back to the way it always had sat in high school before she started trying to tame it back, He wondered vaguely if she’d called her father yet, or if that was even where she was heading. Of course there was the imminent possibility he’d walk outside and there would be the taskforce to take her home and grab him…

But that wasn’t the point. He found it easiest to just watch her knowing that it would in all likelihood be the last time he’d see her this close, unless it was behind a witness stand or with bars between them.

He finally gave in though as her efforts got more frantic, and he could tell she looked like she was reaching a breakdown point again. Softly he asked her, “Would you like some help?”

She jumped, dropping a stack of clothes that she had been holding in her arms. She swerved and he noticed her eyes were still slightly red. She glowered at him before she reached back for her things, “What are you doing here?”

He sighed, “Aoko I offered to leave, but you were the one who decided you had to get out of the house. I wanted to see how you were doing, if you’d rather I can-” He turned to go.

He heard her dump more things onto the bed and she called after him, “No. No you don’t have to leave Kaito. It’s your house after all. Don’t be silly-”

“Aoko it’s as much yours. I’ve told you that- honestly I should be the one packing up and leaving,” he crossed the room and closed the top of the suitcase forcing her to look up at him. “Why don’t you stay? I’ll put it in your name, and I’ll just- leave. Go to Europe, America, wherever… I’ll do it anyway as soon as your out. I’m out of your hair, and you can do whatever you like with it after I’m gone.” He gave her a weak smile, “Let me do that much for you alright?”

She shoved his hand aside and started sliding more clothes in, “Don’t be dense. I’m not staying here, and if you think I’m going to sit here alone you know me even less than I thought. We’ve already had this discussion, now drop it.”

He leaned forward and she froze when she felt his hand touch her arm, “Aoko-”

“No… Don’t’ do this to me. Not now Kaito, please,” there was a hint of pleading in her voice. Even she was not that strong, and every time he caught her with those eyes of his, or the sound of his voice when it echoed like a snake charmers… It threw her off more and more.

This time she couldn’t let it happen.

“No-” she ripped her arm away and hasitally started zipping the suitcases. “I’ll… I’ll just send someone for the rest. I be Keiko would do it, or someone. Or you can yourself-” she snapped. “I have to-”

He touched her arm again and she made the mistake of looking up, “I’ll go,” he told her softly.

“Kaito-”

“This is stupid Aoko. You’re falling to pieces, and if anyone should it should be me. It’s my fault after all, and I knew what I was doing when I got you into this mess. Now you’re blaming yourself and…” she found herself trempbling under his hold.

“Not now…”

“I know. I’ve already pleaded with you. Begged. Asked… but.. I know, knew… “ his head hung.

“Please let me go Kaito…”

He looked at her for one long moment and finally whispered, “I didn’t lie about it you know. That I loved you? I always did… I never… ever wanted to involve you…”

She didn’t even move, and not a single tear escaped. She simple pulled away and with a sad smile shook her head, “Well it was a bit late for that now wasn’t? I’ll send the lawyer over in the morning-”

She couldn’t let herself soften now.

Because if she let it melt even just a hairsbreadth, she wasn’t sure she could stand up again at all.

Repentance was no longer and option…

And all she could think was how close her heart was coming to breaking all over again, just when she’d thought she’d remolded it again.
