[Feb. 22] [Detective Conan] Unapologetic

Title: Unapologetic
Day/Theme: Feb. 22: "My heart is hardn'd, I cannot repent."
Series: Detective Conan
Character/Pairing: Shinichi, Heiji
Rating: R/M

When Hattori walked into his hospital room, Shinichi all but dropped his book into his lap. It had been several days since he had last seen his friendly rival; their last encounter had been that awful afternoon on the hospital roof. Heiji had avoided him ever since, and Shinichi had been left wondering if perhaps he had managed to completely destroy things. He watched apprehensively as Heiji crossed the room and came to a stop beside his bed.

There was a moment of silence as the Osakan teenager seemed to compose himself. Then he spoke. “I’m not sorry,” he began slowly. “I’m not sorry that I stopped you. I’m sorry I didn’t see things were that bad before it got to that point. I’m sorry that you felt that was your only option. And I’m sorry if this hurt our friendship. But I’m not sorry that I wouldn’t let you hurt yourself.”

Shinichi felt his jaw drop slightly.

“If this did hurt our friendship…well, I hope it hasn’t,” he went on, a bit more softly now. “But dammit, Kudo, you scared the shit out of me. And if you ever do something like that again…I don’t even know what I’ll do to you. But it will not be pleasant.” He caught Shinichi’s gaze squarely, and there was a hard edge to Hattori’s eyes that left no question as to how serious he was.

Through this whole speech, Shinichi was struck by a couple of things. First, it still bowled him over as to just how worried about him Hattori was. If everyone else was this concerned…it made him feel even worse about what he had nearly done.

And secondly…Hattori was just as worried about their friendship as he was. He knew that he and his fellow detective had rather gotten past their initial stage of being rivals and had become friends. But it wasn’t until all of this had happened that he’d realized exactly how strong that friendship had gotten. The idea of that being destroyed—particularly because of something he did—scared him more than he had thought it would. But Hattori was just as worried…

Heiji sighed. “That’s all. Just wanted to say that.” He took a step back, as though to leave, but stopped when a hand grabbed the back of his shirt. He turned around. “What’s up?”

Shinichi was holding onto him and looking at him. There was remorse written into every single line of his face, and a faint glimmer of hope in his eyes. He could not speak. His apologies would have to be mute.

It was the best he could do.
