It wasn’t the thoughts of a rational man that had led him to pour the gem’s tears down her throat, but then at that moment he really hadn’t cared. She had been dying, he had been sure of it, and with that glowing gem crying in his hand it was all he could do to pry Aoko’s lips open and let them slip down her throat.

He’d watched as the wounds healed themselves, and she fell into a natural slumber of healing. He half believed the tears had not simply made her immortal, but an angel that was cursed to walk the earth. That was the first moment he actually considered what it was he’d done.

Except then he’d been distracted by the fighting. The group had come back to try to take the gem into their keeping, and he hadn’t given another thought to what he’d done to her except She’s safe. The repercussions of what that might mean never went through his head.

Not until much later, until it was almost done. It wasn’t as though he was uninjured himself, on the contrary he knew he’d have to seek some help himself. Except that as he went back to her he began to realize what he’d done.

Immortality.

That thing desired by every man.

Such a barefaced lie. Who wanted immortality? He could see her staying ageless, beautiful, still barely out of her teens while those around her grew old and died. First her father, then people like Keiko or Hakuba or even Akako with time. Himself. He’d cursed her to an existence of loneliness. She’d be cursed forever, without even an single person who could stay at her side.

What had he done?

His walk turned into a run. He had to get to her, had to get to the gem before dawn came. It was the least he could do… Even if she never forgave him, well at least he would be there too. A lover or servant it didn’t matter to him, just so long as he knew that it might ease some of the pain.

Just so long as she didn’t have to bear the burden alone.

Except that as he reached her it was too late. Already the gem’s light was fading, and the light glow that had seemed to surround the girl and stone both seemed to be extinguished. He held up Pandora, pleading that just one more drop would come, but there was nothing left.

It would be another 10,000 years before it would cry again…

In a moment of despair he wondered what would happen if he swallowed the whole thing? Perhaps he’d get the last residue? Perhaps there was still a chance?

Not that he was ceritan he could swallow a stone that size but…

He reached down to touch Aoko’s face as he dropped the gem.

“What have I done?” he whispered hoarsely. “…Father what have I done…” he asked looking up at the silent sky as though seeking a reply.

His fingers traced her eyes, cheeks, and finally her lips where he could feel the faint trace of her shallow breath and-

And the remnants of Pandora’s tears…

There it was- the honey like texture still clinging to her lips- just the faintest traces but…

“Oh sweet… make me immortal with a kiss-” he whispered.

All at once he pulled the girl into his arms and pushed his against lips against hers. True they’d never kissed before. True that if she woke up them she’d probably kill him doubly. He went as far to let his tongue glance over her lips, attempting to gain every last drop that remained from the stone.

He wasn’t sure it was enough, he wasn’t sure it would even work, but it was the last thing he could think of. He could taste a sugary sweetness fall down his throat, as well as sharp bitter tang that reminded him of blood.

He almost choked on it, but forced it down.

When he felt that it was either do or die at that point, he pulled away to see Aoko’s eyes opening.

“Kaito?” It was almost a whisper.

He buried his face in her neck, unable to cry, but filled with such remorse-

“I’m sorry…”

And even as he said it he could feel that his wounds had healed completely.

“But I swear…” he told her softly “I swear you will never have to be alone… “

"Then- I forgive you-"
