[Feb. 16] [Detective Conan] Parents
Title: Parents
Day/Theme: Feb 16: “Sweet Helen, make me immortal with a kiss.”
Series: Detective Conan
Character/Pairing: Yuusaku, Yukiko, Kogoro
Rating: R/M
Kogoro had not left the hospital. He had sent Ran home with Eri to get some rest, and he had forced the Hattori boy to go with them and sleep for a while. But he himself had not left the building, despite the fact that it had been a good day and a half since Shinichi had come out of his initial examination. He was going into his second night without sleep.
He was exhausted, yet the idea of sleep seemed as far away as the stars themselves. So he sat there, waiting and letting his thoughts wander. The whole mess had hit him harder than he wanted to admit.
The door to the waiting room opened.
Kogoro looked up instinctively, and was only mildly startled to see the Kudos come flying in. They looked a bit disheveled—an unusual state for them—and he had the impression that they had probably gotten the call and dropped everything to come running to the other side of the world.
“Where’s Shinichi?” Yukiko asked, voice high with anxiety. “Where is my son?”
He rose and held up a hand; it was only now that it hit him just how tired he was. “Come with me,” he said shortly, gesturing towards a door that led out of the waiting room and into an adjoining corridor. They followed quickly.
“What happened?” Yuusaku demanded when the doors had closed behind them. “Agasa only gave us the bare details over the phone. He said he didn’t know much—“
“He called you before there was much for news,” Kogoro said. “To be blunt…he’s been dragged through hell face down.” He waved a hand again for silence and went on. “You know he was kidnapped. While they had him, they beat him—severely, judging by the injuries. There are cuts and injuries that indicate torture—things that cause pain but would not be lethal on their own.”
He paused and looked at them. He was trying to be as succinct about this as possible; they looked stricken. And he had not yet told them the worst of it. He almost didn’t, but…they were his parents. They had a right to know. If the situation was reversed and he was asking about Ran, he would have wanted to know the whole story.
Taking a deep breath, Kogoro went on. “And…there was evidence of sexual assault as well.”
He hadn’t even finished the sentence when Yukiko put her hand over her mouth and closed her eyes. “Oh my god…” she actually swayed, and for a moment it almost seemed that her exhaustion plus the shock of the news would send her into overload. But she straightened, though she kept her eyes squeezed tightly shut. “Can we see him?”
He nodded and led them further down the corridor. “You can go into his room,” Kogoro explained as they reached the correct door. “He’s still out. It’s easier on him for right now.” Given the nature of the injuries and the procedures that had to be done, it had been decided that it was far easier to let the boy sleep through it, painless and unaware.
As one doctor had put it, Shinichi wouldn’t be able to count to one for at least another twelve hours.
When they went in, Yukiko immediately rushed across the room to his bedside. She touched her son’s face, brushing his hair back, kissing his forehead, and whispering to him though she knew he could not hear her. But Yuusaku hung back a bit, like he wasn’t entirely sure what to do. Not that Kogoro necessarily blamed him. Shinichi looked so small, frail, vulnerable in that bed.
Realizing that he was being observed, Yuusaku sighed. “When the call came…we dropped everything. Got on the first flight here. Yukiko cried the entire way.” He looked and sounded exhausted.
“I think all of us need to get some sleep,” Kogoro said. “There’s really not much else we can do now.”
