[February 16] [Original] What Man Fears the Most
Title: What Man Fears the Most
Day/Theme: February 16/ Sweet Helen, make me immortal with a kiss
Series: Original
Character/Pairing: Original
Rating: PG
"You know what's funny?"
"Besides a lot of things, what are you specifically looking for me to agree with?"
He gave her The Look, but continued on. "I'm serious, it's funny how we spend most of our lives trying to find the perfect mate, and then once we do, we die."
"That's funny to you?" She didn't open her eyes, she knew he was pacing. She could hear the soft shuffle of his feet upon the ground. Whenever the man got deep, philosophical thoughts into his head, he'd always pace around, or frown deeply as though the answer that was eluding him was treasure or something.
"Well, not funny as in ha-ha-ha-ha, but funny as in ironic."
She kept silent for a long time, not really knowing how to answer. She knew where this was coming from, but besides that, she didn't really know how to handle it. It wasn't as though there was an instruction manual on how to treat the terminally ill.
After awhile, the silence still continued. She opened her eyes finally, and got up from the blanket she had been previously lying on.
He was sitting on the bench, staring out at the glimmering lake, and the tiny slivers of light from the moon, playing on the darkness of the water.
She sat down beside him. "Are you okay?" She turned toward him, but his eyes kept staring straight ahead.
The lack of response didn't deter her. It was practically their ritual while they were alone. "You know, I don't think it's that we're supposed to see it as ironic, but as worthwhile."
He didn't turn toward her, but she knew he was listening. "We're only here for a short time, and that means we need to take that short time and make it worth living until we do pass on."
She scooted closer to him, and quickly gave him a sloppy kiss on his pale cheek. He turned his head away from hers, but not before she saw him grin a little.
She sighed softly. "Do you regret us being together?"
"No, it- it's just that I regret not being with you sooner."
He took her hand in his, and squeezed it gently. She forced herself to take a small breath. She was on the brink of tears, but didn't want him to see her cry for him. That was the one thing he had asked of her, and she didn't want to disappoint him. It was the only thing she was capable of doing- she should've been able to do it perfectly. But it was hard. Tonight was supposed to be a romantic night, just them sitting by their favorite lake, not her drowning in her tears, and ruining everything.
He put a hand around her shoulders, and her head automatically went to lie on his.
"We got together when we did, and we're going to make it worthwhile for as long as we can," she replied.
"We are," he agreed. She leaned toward him, and kissed him gently. They closed their eyes, and lost themselves in the kiss. He knew what his end was- that it was fast approaching. But, for that moment in time, he felt immortal kissing the woman he loved with all his being.
