[Feb. 15] [Detective Conan] Coming and Going

Title: Coming and Going
Day/Theme: Feb. 15: ”Money can't buy love, but it improves your bargaining position.”
Series: Detective Conan
Pairing: Yuusaku, Yukiko, Kogoro, Eri
Rating: R/M

When they had gotten the call about what had happened, Yuusaku and Yukiko had dropped everything and rushed to Japan on the first available flight. For all they knew, his manuscript was still strewn across his desk and his editors were after his blood, and her colleagues in a local theatre project were cursing her right to exist, but neither truly cared.

But the fact was that sooner or later they were going to have to make arrangements; it was a matter of necessity and practicality. Shinichi was due to be released from the hospital soon, and they were certainly not going to leave him alone in that house. He was a good deal better than he had been, but he still could not speak, and he still had horrible nightmares at times.

The issue then became how they were going to handle it—should they both go? Should one of them stay and the other one go? Should they take Shinichi with them? They were especially considering that last. On the one hand, a change of scenery might help by taking him away from the place where so many terrible things had happened. But on the other hand, he still clung to Ran so desperately that taking him away from her could be disastrous.

So they were discussing it, sitting in an isolated corner of the hospital waiting room. Eri and Kogoro were sitting silently nearby, listening to the discussion and sympathizing as parents.

Thus far, no agreement seemed to be in sight. Yukiko in particular was torn—there were things in America that she needed to take care of herself if she was going to be gone for a great length of time…but the idea of leaving her son alone at a time like this was nearly unbearable. Yuusaku had his own arrangements to make, but the same weight was on him.

It was really a matter of who would stay and who would go back at this point.

What to do, what to do…

They lapsed into silence for a moment.

And then, into that pause…

“He’ll stay with us.”

Both looked up at the voice, startled.

Kogoro was staring straight ahead in his chair, not looking at them. “He can stay with us,” he repeated. “It’s no trouble—we’ve had him for this long. He can’t be left alone right now. And it would put him where Ran can keep an eye on him for a little longer. That’ll make her happy. You two can go take care of things, and then come back.”

Beside him, Eri was stunned. While she was certain that her estranged husband harbored no grudge against Shinichi for the Conan situation, it still startled her that he would again open up his home, this time with full knowledge of who he was opening his home to. And to specifically mention that the kid would be close to Ran…

Maybe this whole situation had hit him harder than she’d thought.

Yuusaku rose to his feet. “We can pay for—“

“Don’t worry about it,” Kogoro also stood, as did the two women. “Take care of what you need to take care of. In the meantime, he’ll be taken care of.”

Yukiko stepped past her husband, crossed the distance between them, and wrapped her arms around Kogoro’s neck for a hug. He was obviously a bit startled by the gesture, but returned it a bit awkwardly. “Thank you,” she said softly. “Thank you…”

“He’ll be all right,” Kogoro replied. It was almost the collective mantra of everyone who was worrying for Shinichi—that phrase had crossed all of their lips at least once in the past weeks.

As before, Eri stood next to him, watching and listening in silent amazement.
