[Feb. 13] [Detective Conan] AU: Attempted

Title: AU: Attempted
Day/Theme: Feb. 13: ”That time may cease and midnight never come.”
Series: Detective Conan
Character/Pairing: Shinichi, Heiji
Rating: R/M

The sunset was absolutely lovely.

Shinichi stood by the fence that ran around the perimeter of the hospital roof and looked out over the darkening sky, his fingers hanging on the metal links. He felt…strange. Lighter, somehow, knowing what he had decided to do and that everything was going to be okay soon.

There would not be another night.

He sighed and stepped back from the fence, turning away from the sunset and the vista. He had snuck up here once before. The place he had chosen was on the other side of the roof, near a small shed that housed various maintenance tools and appliances. He could sit on the ground and lean against the wall there and just wait for it all to be over.

It was the best spot he had found up here.

He sighed and took one step forward…and realized he was not alone on the roof.

“What’re you doing?” Hattori Heiji was standing there, near the door that led to the stairs. He had his hands in his pockets and an extremely suspicious look on his face.

A rush of panic ran through Shinichi when he realized he had been spotted and followed. Hattori wouldn’t understand—he wouldn’t leave him up here alone. He couldn’t…he needed to…

Then, to his surprise, Hattori smiled. “Couldn’t stand that room anymore, could you?” While Shinichi stared, stunned, Hattori walked towards him and stood beside him, looking out over the horizon. “I don’t blame ya. Probably gets awfully boring down in there. But you shouldn’t go sneaking off like that.”

Shinichi nodded, trying to decide what to do. He swallowed hard and began inching towards the shed on the other side of the roof, keeping his eyes squarely on Hattori.

Hattori noticed, and followed his movements. “Just want to walk around for a while or what?” His smile faltered and shifted to a frown as he observed the nervous, stilted walk. “Kudo…what are you doing?” The suspicion returned, and Hattori advanced with strides that were much longer than Shinichi’s. “Kudo. What are you—”

Shinichi suddenly burst into motion. He grabbed the doorknob of the shed, praying that somehow fate would smile on him just this once…and he felt it turn in his hand. The door gave way beneath his minimal weight, and he tumbled into the shed. He kicked the door shut and fumbled with the lock, hearing the click in the second before Hattori grabbed the knob.

“KUDO!” Hattori was shouting from the other side of the door; he pounded and rattled the knob furiously. “Dammit, Kudo, open the door! What the hell are you doing in there?”

Feeling his heart pound angrily in his chest, Shinichi moved away from the door. The shed was tiny; there wasn’t a great deal of room to move around or hide. One hand fumbled into his robe pocket for the small object he had hidden there—the key to his salvation.

But as he stared at it, he hesitated. It was the first time a second thought had really even crossed his mind. Could he really do this with Hattori right there, outside the room?

…Hattori would be fine. He had always been resilient. It wasn’t like he needed him…

Taking a deep breath, Shinichi made his final decision.

Heiji was angry and terrified—never a good combination. He began laying his shoulder against the door in a mad attempt to break it down. He had done this before. It should only take a few good hits—

“What are you doing?”

It was an echo of what he had said, sneaking up on Kudo. He turned around.

Kudo Yuusaku was watching him curiously. “I heard yelling. What are you doing? And where’s Shinichi?”

Heiji froze for a second…and then everything came out of him in a frightened rush. “I don’t know what’s going on—I just saw him come up here and I followed him and he locked himself in and I think he’s going to do something…”

Somehow, the message got across. Yuusaku crossed the distance and pounded on the door. “Shinichi? It’s your father—open the door.” They listened. No sound. “SHINICHI!” There was an uncharacteristic note of fear in the author’s voice.

“Move!”

Yuusaku stepped to the side just in time to avoid being rammed by the Osakan teenager. Heiji slammed into the door. It creaked noisily. He stepped back again and lunged one more time—

And the door gave way as the latch broke, sending Heiji sprawling into the room. He took a look around…and found exactly what he had been hoping he wouldn’t find.

Oh god…

Kudo-sensei was already in there behind him. A hand grabbed Heiji’s shoulder, shoving him back out the door with a hissed order to get help. It went against all of Heiji’s instincts—he didn’t want to leave. He wanted to stay right there. But sense prevailed for the moment, and he vaulted himself down the stairs.

The one blessing of this situation was that they were in a hospital.

Heiji grabbed the first person he saw—a nurse. He managed to stammer out the situation. Her eyes widened, and she rushed to the nearest phone, calling for help. Leaving it in her hands, Heiji ran back towards the stairs, back to the roof.

Yuusaku was on his knees on the shed floor, his hands stained dark vermillion. The pool on the cement floor just seemed to be growing and growing…how could there be that much blood in such a small body? Such a small, unmoving body…

He didn’t have long to stand there, though. There were people behind him—someone with a stretcher. He recognized a doctor. And in short order, he found himself shoved to the side, pushed outside. Again, it went against everything he felt—he didn’t want to leave his friend’s side. But they weren’t letting him back in, he couldn’t get close—

Hands grabbed his shoulders in an iron grasp and pulled him backwards, away from the shed. He struggled, but to no avail. Who was holding him, anyway…oh, it was Oyaji, and he didn’t look happy…

He heard his father telling him to calm down, but he couldn’t think. It seemed beyond his capabilities to do such a thing. He protested, argued—and then he saw his father raise a hand as though to strike him, like he had done at that one case…

Heiji froze; he closed his eyes and winced, anticipating the blow.

It did not fall. Instead, hands gripped his shoulders. “Heiji. Calm down,” his father said sternly.

Breathing heavily, Heiji looked back towards the shed. They were taking him out now, carrying him on a stretcher. They were shouting to each other in angry voices; it seemed he was still alive, though already weakened considerably. And one of them was showing another a scalpel that he had picked up from the floor inside the shed.

The sharpened edge was stained.

It was one of the very few times in Heiji’s life that he wanted to break down and just cry—whether his father was standing there watching or not.

PS. Before anyone panics, this is actually an AU scene for the fic XD I just wanted to write it and get it all out of my head. There will be a second AU section later in the month. Thanks for reading!
