[Feb. 12] [Detective Conan] Peace Offering
Title: Peace Offering
Day/Theme: Feb. 12: “The sweet fruition of an earthly crown.”
Series: Detective Conan
Character/Pairing: Shinichi, Ran, Heiji
Rating: R/M
Shinichi was awakened by the sound of his hospital room door opening; it was Ran, with Hattori right behind her. He suspected that they intended to wake him, else they would not have made so much noise upon entry. He had been sleeping well as of late, with far fewer of the nightmares that had plagued him initially. Still, when the nightmares came, they came with a vengeance.
“Good morning!” Ran said cheerfully. She too seemed so much better now, more at ease with everything. He could only hope that it was genuine, and not some act that she was putting on his for his benefit. She reached out and gave him a one-armed squeeze. “Did you get enough sleep?”
He nodded and offered up a tiny smile.
Hattori, meanwhile, was staring at something beyond Shinichi. “Oi, Kudo…” he said after a moment, “…what’s that?” He pointed past the boy in the hospital bed towards the bedside table.
More specifically, at a vase of flowers sitting on the table. They hadn’t been there the night before, and since he had just woken up and focused his attention immediately on the door, Shinichi hadn’t noticed them until they were pointed out.
Ran moved around the bed and picked up the vase for closer examination. It was a pretty glass vase, holding a beautiful bouquet of… “White roses,” Ran breathed, gently running her fingers over the soft, flawless white petals. “How lovely!”
As she moved the vase back to the table, she knocked a small white envelope from the edge of the table; it fell to the floor. Ran stooped to pick it up and handed it to Shinichi.
Heiji leaned over to read the front of the envelope over Shinichi’s shoulder. “Tantei-kun?” he read aloud. “I’m guessing that’s you?”
But Shinichi was already tearing into the envelope and withdrawing from it a small white card with that same neat, mildly-familiar handwriting inscribed across it. And he read…
Best wishes for a speedy recovery, meitantei.
Don’t let them beat you.
It was signed with a Kaitou Kid doodle.
Shinichi’s first reaction was a jolt of panic. Kaitou Kid had come here—a stranger had been in his room while he was asleep, and he hadn’t woken up or noticed it. He could have been…
As he thought of this, Heiji took the card from his hand and read it before handing it to Ran. “Wow,” he said. “Looks like you’ve even got outlaws worrying about you.” There was no annoyance at the thief or his unusual antics, but more a small sort of wonder at the fact that Kid knew of the situation and cared enough to go out of his way to issue a gesture of goodwill like that to one of his pursuers.
Somehow, that statement calmed Shinichi down. It reminded him of what Hattori had told him before, on another day that had heralded his darkest moment.
“There are a lot of people here who are worried about you. Everyone’s scared to death for you! But apparently that doesn’t mean shit to you, or else we wouldn’t be here, would we?”
…but it did matter.
It was something he was growing to understand more and more.
“Shinichi,” Ran interrupted his thoughts, picking up something else from the table. It rattled as she passed it to him. “There’s this, too.”
It proved to be a box of lemon-flavored candies.
He stared at it for a moment, completely taken aback…and then smiled. Even his nemesis—somehow, he couldn’t bring himself to use the word enemy to describe Kaitou Kid—was worried about him.
Such a strange thief…
Still smiling that tiny little grin, he opened the box and offered the sweets to Hattori and Ran.
Outside the room, a nurse watched through the window. When the boy smiled, the nurse smiled as well, a smile that reached all the way to warm blue eyes.
They would have to have a chase sometime soon, when this was all over. He certainly enjoyed it, and it might help distract Kudo from the past. He always proved good at playing the game.
Satisfied, the nurse continued on, walking slowly down the hospital corridor.
