[Feb. 9] [Detective Conan] Missed Opportunities
Title: Missed Opportunities
Day/Theme: Feb. 9: “Yet let me kiss my lord before I die.”
Series: Detective Conan
Character/Pairing: Shinichi (as Conan)
Rating: R/M
I should have kissed her that time…
Sitting in the darkness, there wasn’t a great deal Shinichi could do aside from thinking. At the moment, Ran was dominating his thoughts. He had resisted the urge to dwell on it thus far, but it proved an exercise in futility right now, and she had full hold on his mind.
He kept going back to one moment in particular: Haibara had just given him the antidote—at that time, he was unaware that it was temporary. And he had snuck onto the stage, hidden beneath the costume of the Black Knight’s cloak. He had pulled her close, an act which he later found flew in the face of the actual script. And he had nearly kissed her…
Only to let himself be distracted by a murder in the audience.
So close...
He wondered what she was doing right then. He had no way of actually knowing how long it had been since “Conan” had vanished, but he suspected that at least a couple of days had passed. There was no way that his disappearance had been missed. Were they searching for him? Did they know why he had been snatched away?
…how was Ran holding up? She had said many times that Conan was like her little brother. She was bound to be worried. Still, he suspected that they would never discover him—certainly not before it was too late. Yet again, she would be hurt by his actions, intentional or not.
It seemed that all he could really do was cause her pain.
Up until this point, he had always believed that somehow, someday, he would make it back to her. He realized now that such a dream was nothing more than a farce. He had missed so many opportunities to tell her, hold her, kiss her…and he’d blown it. He had always thought of her as being his, but…
That was a lie.
She had never been his because he had been too much of an idiot to make it a reality. And now with everything that had happened in this place…he didn’t deserve her. She deserved someone wonderful who could make her the happiest person in the world.
He couldn’t do that.
Ran’s face was the one happy thought he had left…but the fact was that he would never see her again except in his thoughts in this last wasted part of his life. Holding on her and thinking about her was only reminding him of what he’d had…and what he’d lost.
Closing his eyes, he did the one thing he had never really dreamed he would do.
I’m sorry, Ran. I’m sorry I broke my promise. I’m sorry I couldn’t make it back to you.
He mentally released that which had never truly been his…and he let Ran go.
Now, with nothing left to hold onto, all he had to do was wait for the darkness to swallow him.
PS. We’ll be getting to more actual action very soon. I promise *looks at scene for the twelfth through the fourteenth and cackles to self* Ooooh, this is going to be fuuuuun~
