[February 7th] [Avatar] Way of Princes

Title: Way of Princes
Day/Theme: Feb. 7 - "Virtue is the fount whence honour springs"
Series: Avatar
Character/Pairing: Zuko (Zuko/Mai)
Rating: PG-13ish (for some inappropriate imagery)

Zuko has few personal belongings. This is the way of princes.

He tries to tell himself he keeps Uncle’s dagger because it is useful, and if something has use, the weak sentiment behind it is of no consequence. (He has no such excuses about Mai’s stone, and so he hides it away in folds and sashes, keeping it safe from prying eyes, especially his own.)

Still, Uncle’s eyes are sharp, and Uncle knows why Zuko keeps the dagger, and Zuko hates how his heart swells. It is shameful for a man to find happiness in such a thing. (It is also shameful that Zuko’s thoughts of Mai are far from worthy, dreaming as he does of dishonouring her in his cabin, as she gasps and urges him onwards.)

Zuko clings tight to his pride because it is all he has left. He once had his honour and his birthright, but those days (filled with sunlight and children's laughter) are long ago. And now, now he knows (deep inside) that he is a failure, a boy unworthy to ever be a man.
