Disclaimer: Still Gosho’s… totally would’ve said yes to the rights for my b-day tho ^^;;
He leaned against the hard concrete wall with his eyes closed, and to a passerby could have been dead. His breathing was shallow, and his entire focus was on his breathing and listening.
Then there were footsteps.
The low shallow breathing stopped. The sound would have sent kills down anyone else’s spine, or perhaps sent them into a frenzy of fear, but this man did nothing to but stay against the wall with his eyes closed.
He didn’t even wince as the nearing footsteps finally came to rest in front of his cell, after the long walk down the hall. There was a sense of finality to the whole thing, a bit like an approaching doom that simply came to halt right before him. The young man didn’t even open an eye, but rather returned his breathing to steady streams.
Poker face.
He’d faced his death before, this time there was no way out, and than perhaps he did deserve it. Hard to say.
It was the unlocking of the cell that finally made him peek open one eye, and that finally had both of them shoot open as he nearly fell over from his perch.
“What are you doing here? You‘re not part of this division,” He shot at her, though his voice came out hoarse from a lack of water and lack of use.
“They’re going to execute you tonight, and no doubt they‘ll come for you in a few hours. We don‘t have very long,” she said in a hushed voice her head turning side to side checking for other guards just incase. She held a keycard as well as his cell key in her hand, and he also noticed in surprise a few of his more subtle sleeping gas grenades were in her other hand and pocket.
He had a look on his face as though he didn’t quite understand what she was saying. The words went completely over his head, and he wasn’t sure he’d actually heard a word of it. He was still trying to grasp that she was standing in the door with the keys and apparently sleeping grenades. He tried again, “…Aoko what’s going on? You shouldn‘t be here. If you‘re caught-”
Her eyes flashed and she threw open the door standing in steadily. She looked more stubborn than he’d ever seen her, and perhaps even angrier than when they’d unmasked him. Funny that here was a full fledged criminal when he thought the last time he’d ever see her was as she screamed curses to his face.
Her feet shifted and she threw another glance over her shoulder, “You’re the one that shouldn’t be here. You know as well as I do that you didn’t kill those men-”
His head hung and he couldn’t meet his eye, “….You’re wrong I-”
She bit her lip and let out a long sigh, “Fine. You might’ve killed the one man, but it had to be in self defense. Hakuba got in too late, except that he was certain the second person at least wasn’t killed by you. If anything you killed that assassin, or whatever he was, trying to save the other man! Look Kaito I may hate KID, but even I know that he Does. Not. Harm.” The last three words she said firmly and made sure he looked her in the eye. It was hard to tell who believed it more: the thief or the woman.
Kaito threw her one of his old smiles and shook his head, “I killed a man Aoko. I deserve-”
“Not this!” she nearly screamed. The resonance in her voice bounced off the hall and echoed behind her. He could tell she was furious, and he couldn’t for the life of him understand why she was even there. “Kaito do you think, do you honestly think I would come do all this if I didn’t know you were innocent? Yes. Yes maybe you deserve to be in prison for the rest of your life. Yes maybe your not completely right, or maybe you did kill a man. But you do not deserve to die. Not like this at least.” She took a step forward and he was shocked to see tears building up in her eyes, “Please Kaito. Escape. It doesn’t matter anyway, they’ll know there was an attempt and they saw me enter. What do you have to lose?”
He stood up perhaps a little slower then usual, his muscles were growing stiff from the weeks he had been forbidden from doing anything but sit in the cell. “Are you sure they were going to go through with it so soon? I thought they waited years-”
She shook her head, “They sent the message to father last night, and I came as fast as I could. They didn’t want to risk you escaping… but… I couldn’t let them. Kaito they say it can take up to twenty minutes for the prisoner to die,” this time she was starting to full out cry. Her voice was calm but the flood wouldn’t stop, “Even Dad was furious. I think he may still be out drinking…” she whispered under her breath.
He was fighting from shaking. His face never gave away the cold fear that ran through him, and for the second time in his life he realized he wasn’t quite ready to die. He walked up to the girl and gave a short nod, “Are you sure about this Aoko? You’re not a criminal.”
Even through her tears she had to let out a laugh, “I think it’s a little late to be saying that.” She held up the sleeping grenade and then from her other pocket pulled out his card gun. She smiled when she saw a look of surprise come over his face, and she stepped forward to place it in his hands. “I thought you’d need this.”
He shook his head still trying to get over Aoko handing him the card gun, “How did you find these?”
She gave a noncommittal shrug. “It pays to have your father as one of the Chief Inspectors. They had this stuff confiscated. I snuck in while they were still trying to work out how you’d put them together. They won’t find out its all missing until we’re gone, and even then Dad and Hakuba won’t be the ones to report it in. They’ll probably find out you’ve escaped before they realize these are gone.”
“We?”
“The cops arent’ complete idiots Kaito, and one saw me before I shot them with sleeping gas. There’s no way I’ll go free…”
He was still staring at her like he still couldn’t quite believe he was having this argument, here she was telling him that he should escape… Aoko…
“But…”
“Kaito I’m not going to let you win this argument… Please… this isn’t about what’s right or wrong… just or unjust… I- I know that it’s right. That this is right… that…” she was stopped as out of seemingly nowhere the criminal bent down to cup her cheeks and cut her off with a kiss. Red flooded her cheeks and for the first time in ages both of them felt like maybe… just maybe… everything would turn out all right.
“Fine..” he said as he pulled away with the slightest smile, and she realized that she was suddenly against the bars. She could feel his breath on her cheek and he threw her a wink as he took her hand.
She was about to respond when suddenly she head a commotion from somewhere else, and both of them froze as what sounded like it might be a siren started.
As they both started running through the door Kaito added over the rising noise.
“I’m not sure that they agree with the justice of your quarrel!”
“….Just shut up and run will you!”
“Thanks!!”
“…Please… Don’t mention it-”
