He remembered being flung into a bottomless river and almost drowning when he was 14 years old. His master had called it ‘intensive training’; Driel called it ‘abuse’.

“Fire dragons have one weakness, Driel. You know what that is right?”

Driel felt a lump develop in his throat as memories of home surfaced in his head; he couldn’t get the image of Medea’s smile out of his head. Briefly, he wondered if either Raz or Medea were worried about him; he chuckled a bit. Most likely not he thought; his brother looked ill when he left and Medea was probably too preoccupied with him to think about him. Quelling the jealous feeling bubbling in his stomach, Driel replied, “Water of course. What the heck does this have to do with my hands?”

His master smiled while twirling his walking stick in his hand; the twirling stopped and he snapped his arm to the left of Driel’s head. The young dragon blinked and turned his head in its direction; the river sparkled in the morning sunlight and that day, it seemed to be moving faster than usual. Driel turned his head back and furrowed his red brows in mock curiosity. “Ooh a river. What are you trying to say old man?”

His master chuckled and his eyes quickly narrowed into slits; Driel let out a grunt as he raised his arms to protect himself from the older dragon’s quick kick that threatened to take off his head. He backed away quickly and put up a defensive stance; he knew he would lose if he was caught off guard once again.

“The first thing you told me when you asked to be my apprentice was that you had no weaknesses,” his master imitated his voice when he repeated his claim; Driel felt his blood boil over dangerously. He let out an angered shout as he aimed a punch towards his head but he met with failure when the old dragon blocked it with his staff. A surprised yelp left the boy’s throat when he felt his feet get swept out from under him; an agonized yell accompanied the yelp as he felt his legs burn. The young man’s hands frantically slapped the fire threatening to engulf his pant legs and he gritted his teeth in pain as he did so; blood tricked down his legs as he tried to stand on them. They trembled

“Us fire dragon are so close to being humans when they are surrounded by water. It’s a weakness that is impossible to overcome. That shows how ignorantly arrogant you are boy.” With each word, his master took a small step forward until there were only a couple of inches separating the two of them.

Driel braced himself as he closed an eye in agony but the pain did not stop him from voicing his feelings on the matter. “It doesn’t matter! Just because something’s impossible doesn’t mean I can’t try!”

He swore the old dragon cracked a smile before he planted a quick fire laced kick in Driel’s abdomen, which knocked the wind out of him and sent him flying into the air above the river. He heard his master chuckle something once more before he hit the surface of the water.

“Minimize your weaknesses and become stronger Driel.”
