[Feb 2] [Elfquest] Wasting Away
Title: Wasting Away
Day/Theme: Feb. 2 - “What feeds me destroys me”
Series: Elfquest
Character/Pairing: Rayek, Ekuar
Rating: PG
His eyes were sunken. He had lost weight and color. His skin seemed more transparent. He looked more like the spirits he’d been communing with than the Master of any palace, even if it was only a pile of starstone like this one.
“They know so much,” Rayek moaned. “They’ve seen so much… whole worlds pass like seasons in their memory…”
“A season?” Ekuar’s voice seemed only mildly wondering, hiding the concern underneath. “A season can be terribly long, brownskin. Why, only a few days without sleep can ruin an elf. Make them unfit for any task.”
That remark was enough to pull Rayek’s eyes from the Scroll of Colors. He frowned slightly, refocusing on his mentor. The ancient elf smiled in return, then sobered.
“It has been seasons without number,” Ekuar said softly. “Years beyond counting. Lifetime upon lifetime, that I haven’t been the most gaunt and starved-eyed elf in the room.”
“You’re well-cared for now.” Rayek said. He finally turned his back on the scroll to look directly at Ekuar.
“And what kind of gratitude would it be if I let you waste away to nothing more than a spirit, feeding on nothing but glowing memories, and sleeping not at all?” Ekuar managed a smile again. “There’s a meal waiting, and a chieftess demanding your attention, and me, your broken down old teacher who may have a few things left to teach you.”
Rayek hesitated, then slowly stepped away from the scroll. He did look back at it longingly as Ekuar led him out, but didn’t argue. The thing had been waiting since the beginning of their races time. It could wait a little longer.
