[Feb 1] [Fables] Sought
Title: Sought
Day/Theme: Feb. 1- “Who ever loved that loved not at first sight?”
Series: Fables
Character/Pairing: Charming chats with Bigby, who apparently feels talkative.
Rating: PG
“At times, I can’t help but wonder,“ the prince said suddenly. His voice was just mocking enough not to be angry, and playful enough that most people wouldn‘t take offense. “How long would you have waited if Bluebeard hadn’t sprung that little enchantment? How long would you have stolen sniffs and darkened her doorstep without actually making a move? Doesn’t it strike you as sad that you’ve pursued the girl so long with so little to show for it in return?”
“She came to me, remember.” The answer was hardly more than a rumble. “Sought me out. After spending considerable time and effort to find a way to make it possible for me to come home with her.”
“And how many countless ages has it been since then? And you’ve gotten nothing from her but arched eyebrows and complaints about the smoke. How can it not occur to you that you‘re wasting your time?”
“If it hadn’t been you that lifted that enchantment off her back in the day,” Bigby replied. “Would she have gone to your palace to find you? Walked the halls until she found whatever parlor or pantry you had the maid cornered in? Have arranged every detail to insure that you could marry her? Would she have gone to that trouble for you?”
There was a silence after that. The two Fables both looked at each other from under lowered eyebrows.
“She never forgot me, either,” Bigby said, lighting a new cigarette. “She wanted me here.”
That much was true. Even if it was only true for one of them.
