[January 30th] [Avatar] Last Night in Ba Sing Se

Title: Last Night in Ba Sing Se
Day/Theme: January 30 (The formula defining the concept of existence)
Series: Avatar
Character/Pairing: Zuko/Mai
Rating: PG-13ish
Notes: Set during the "Going Home Again" comic.

He takes her to the new apartment: everything is as he and Uncle (and he can’t keep the stinging out of his eyes at the thought of him) left it. Uncle’s tea-kettle is waiting to be filled with good, clean water, and Zuko’s new, merchant-caste clothes hang unworn in the closet.

She kisses him in his new, unlived room, mouth wet and eyes half-closed. Sweaty palms, and he can’t do this, and he’d tell her that if her tongue wasn’t in his mouth. He pulls back, and she mumbles Zuko in a way that makes his heart stop and blood pound in his ears.

“I served tea,” he tells her because it suddenly becomes terribly important that she know. “I stole,” he continues, the words refusing to stop. “I was the Blue Spirit.”

She looks at him, beautiful with the moon behind her and the spring of Ba Sing Se all around them, and if she turns on heel and returns to the Fire Nation with this night forgotten, he will be content.

Instead, she takes him back to her rooms at the Earth King’s former palace. The sheets of her bed are as cool as the night is warm, and he shivers as she kisses him, lips parted in promise.
