Bumi lived with contradictions all the time. That of being a captive and a king was not so terribly significant, nor was being an earthbender trapped in metal. As the twisted paths of his brain mused on this, a firebender came along on his mission to shove food through the bars of the tiny box. Bumi took it with an insane laugh.

“You’re a crazy old man,” the soldier muttered under his breath.

The King of Omashu drooled porridge from his mouth for a little extra emphasis. But the man was right; Bumi was the probably the craziest old man anyone had ever met. He prided himself on it.

Decrepit and powerful, wise and ridiculous, the contradictions only made Bumi laugh more. Since he was a child, he had known how to make people pay for underestimating him.

It was amusing, that they thought he couldn’t move. Well, technically he couldn’t. But everything moved around him, and that was good enough. Earthbending had never, after all, been based on lifting the earth with one’s own hands, or it would have little purpose to it.

He winked his eye, and miles away a Fire Nation watchtower fell into the shifting sand.
