Picking the Lock

To Ishida, souls were like locks, tight and gleaming but they could be picked by a knowing hand, unlocked with the right key. In the case of shinigami, the right Soul Slayer.

Ryuuken simply dispensed with the key and broke the lock.

He had watched his father draw back that bow of light many times, the arrows always eradicating the target, pushing it past existence. He was quick, stern, and efficient. He never moved, never spoke, never blinked as took aim, coldly aware that he would never be anything but victorious.

And then he stopped using his power, the ribbons of light retracted, and Ishida was left alone.

If he had known, he might have asked his father that one question all children ask their parents at one time or another.

Why?

Ryuuken would have answered, “I should have used a key.”
