[Jan 23] [Full Metal Panic!] Choice of Music
Title: Choice of Music
Day/Theme: Jan 23/ if music is the food of love, play on
Series: Full Metal Panic!
Character/Pairing: Kaname/Sousuke
Rating: G
Kaname wasn’t sure what made her ask the question. It might have been that she was bored from reading her textbook on Japanese history. It was possible that it had been caused by Kyouko playing her radio in their home room during reading period. It was even possible that the question entered her mind simply from staring at Sousuke as he struggled to memorize his history notes and trying to brighten his mood. Whatever it was, Kaname found herself asking, “Hey Sousuke, what’s your favorite kind of music?”
It took a moment for Sousuke to break free from his intense studying and respond. “Pardon?”
Kaname leaned forward over her desk. “What music do you like to listen to?”
“I’m afraid I don’t understand why this question is important.”
“Well, it’s not important, but I’m curious.”
Souskue raised an eyebrow. “I’m afraid I don’t have a favorite kind.”
“Oh, come on, everyone likes some kind of music. Do you like jazz?”
“Not particularly.”
“Blues?”
“Too gloomy.”
“Classical?”
“I haven’t heard enough to have an actual opinion on it.”
Kaname paused, unsure if she wanted to voice her next suggestion. “...I’ll kill you if you say marching music.”
Sousuke sighed. “Chidori, on the battle field music is not an important issue. In fact...”
Kaname rolled her eyes. “Let me guess, there was once a group of soldiers who got killed by terrorists because they were playing their music too loud.”
Sousuke blinked. “Impressive Chidori. Where did you learn about that? Not many people know about that Russian incident.”
Kaname promptly banged her head against her desk. “You idiot! I was just joking...oh never mind. You’re right, it’s not important. Forget I asked.”
With that, Kaname returned to reading, leaving Sousuke with a baffled look.
Later that evening, Kaname headed to Sousuke’s apartment with food in hand. Often, when making dinner, she would try to make a little extra for Sousuke. It was her small attempt to ensure that Sousuke got a proper meal into his stomach, instead of the dried military rations he’d always eat.
Upon reaching the door, Kaname prepared to knock, but paused when she heard a soft noise coming from within. Kaname blinked, then realized the noise had a certain melody to it. In fact it sounded like a harmonica playing. She didn’t recognize the tune, but she could tell by listening that the player wasn’t an expert at it yet. But why was it coming from Sousuke’s place?
Kaname frowned and knocked. The music stopped and the next noise was the sound of several clicks as Sousuke unlock the many locks on the door and opening it. “Chidori, what brings you..”
Kaname ignored the question and instead zoomed in on the instrument in the soldier’s hand. “Sousuke, you can play the harmonica?”
Sousuke glanced down to his instrument, frowning. “Only somewhat. A comrade of mine taught me a few years ago. I hadn’t thought about it in years, truth be told.”
Probably not until I quizzed you about it this afternoon, Kaname thought, now very intrigued. “Can I hear you play?”
“I suppose...” he replied, slowly “But I’m very rusty and I’m not very good...”
“That’s okay,” she said, shoving her box of food into his arms and marching in. “I want to hear it anyway.”
For the next hour, Sousuke did his best to play for Kaname. She had to admit that Sousuke was no master, but she found his music pleasant and that was good enough for her.
