Fear didn’t mean the same thing to Luna Lovegood that it meant to everyone else. The presence of dark creatures in the world mostly intrigued her, and while her father never endorsed the Dark Arts he had never sheltered her from the types of magic Hogwarts didn’t teach.

But even Luna was afraid in a London increasing controlled by Lord Voldemort – she said the name now, it only made sense. As she approached the house that held the one thing she needed, she tried to breathe evenly and keep thinking.

The woman who answered the door was surprisingly beautiful in person, with the pale skin and striking features characteristic of the Black family. But her eyes revealed that she saw reality far less than Luna did.

“Bellatrix LeStrange?” pronounced Luna carefully.

The woman nodded. “Who are you? And what do you want?”

“I’m Luna Lovegood, as I’m certain you know. And I’m here to ask you to release Ginny Weasley.”

Bellatrix opened the door further and gestured to Luna to enter the House. Luna walked into the front room, which was nearly bare of furniture. There was only one purpose to this place, apparently.

“Why exactly should I care what you want? Why, for that matter, should I not kill you right now?” She didn’t seem to want to waste time arguing about whether Ginny was there.

“Keeping her here isn’t going to tempt Harry Potter out of hiding. She wasn’t even his girlfriend when the war started.”

While true, that wouldn’t keep Harry from caring about Ginny. But someone like Bellatrix LeStrange might not realize that. Something was keeping Harry from being here, but Luna didn’t know exactly what was happening. She suspected no one knew but Harry himself and the friends who might be with him.

“The girl said the same thing. But if that is even true, all it means is that Ginny Weasley’s life is worth nothing to us after all. So why are you here?”

“I have something for you. I think you suspect that already, because I’m talking to you and I’m still alive.”

“Your Order has nothing for us.”

“You realize I’m not here on their behalf. My loyalties have always been questionable.”

Anyone else would have laughed to hear Luna say that but Bellatrix didn’t. “And what do you think you can offer me? Your lovely young self?” She moved closer and picked up a lock of Luna’s hair.

Luna didn’t even blink. “Are you telling me that’s something you want?”

Bellatrix grasped her arm. “I, the servant of the Dark Lord, tempted by you? You’re even less lovely than your red-haired… girlfriend.”

Luna barely thought about Bellatrix touching her, but she took a certain reassurance in this hint that she seemed to have no interest of the kind in Ginny.

“My father told me certain secrets. About the Elder Wand.”

Bellatrix raised an eyebrow. “If the Order knew where the wand was, we would also know.”

“The Order pays little attention to us, actually. We’re insane.”

“I could simply torture—“

“You can’t torture anything out of me. My father taught me that as well.”

Bellatrix gave a contemptuous laugh. “And you really are insane.”

“It’s sane enough what I’m asking. Let Ginny go, and I’ll tell you everything.”

“I don’t make deals. And why would you betray them for the sake of a silly girl? Love?”

Luna already knew Bellatrix’s understand of love was limited. “After all these years of being branded a lunatic by everyone but my Ginny? What do I care?”

“You’re not really offering to join us, are you? This will all end in your death, if you trick us.”

It would end in her death either way, Luna knew, even if she were capable of being a real traitor. But she didn’t reply. She just sat and watched as the twisted gears turned in Bellatrix LeStrange’s mind.

An hour later, Luna was in an upper room of this large house, watching the street from the window. Finally she saw Ginny Weasley stumble down the sidewalk, pale and wearing ragged school robes. As she watched, Ginny began to run until she was out of sight.

“We’re leaving now,” snapped Bellatrix. “You can finish writing down the information when we get there.”

Luna had no idea where Bellatrix was taking her, or if her inevitable fate would come when she was done writing or when the information turned out to be totally worthless. But it didn’t matter, not when she could still think of Ginny running down that street on the way to safety.
