[January 14] [Heat Guy J] Angel
Title: Angel
Day/Theme: January 14/no longer have the capacity to feel anything
Series: Heat Guy J
Character/Pairing: J and Daisuke
Rating: PG
Word Count: 339
“What is it like, to be you, and not to feel?” Daisuke asks J.
Something flickers in J’s eyes, and Daisuke tells himself it’s only electronics. “If I can’t feel, perhaps I can’t describe my feelings.”
Daisuke looks at his sideways. “Did I offend you?”
“No,” says J, but Daisuke suspects he understood both questions.
“Sometimes I think I’d be better off if I couldn’t feel anything. If I could look at that girl who got killed today and just say ‘Oh, that’s a dead girl, let me figure out the clues and get bullets from Kyoko and get out of here.’” Daisuke says.
“Do you think that’s what I said?” asks J.
“Isn’t it? Didn’t you just measure her height and the angle of her neck and calculate the amount of blood and file it all away?”
“Is that what you need me to do, then? To be the one who has no emotions? I can do that, I am certain.”
“What are you telling me?” asks Daisuke, a little confused.
“That girl… she looked a bit like Kyoko, but her hair was red. And she had a small purse, that wasn’t very practical, that she bought to match that dress. I don’t think those things would help me find her, but I remember them.”
“Because Antonia programmed you to,” says Daisuke.
“Yes,” agrees J.
“The same Antonia who programmed you to call Kyoko an angel,” says Daisuke after a moment.
“Yes,” says J. “She has a pleasant body form. And it makes Kyoko happy, doesn’t it?”
“And do you want to get the guy who did that, who killed that angelic red-haired girl?”
“What do you think?” asks J.
Daisuke doesn’t respond. After a moment, J puts a heavy hand on his shoulder. “Don’t trouble yourself thinking about me, Daisuke.”
J’s hand is warm, and Daisuke thinks to himself that that is only how Antonia has built him.
“And don’t trouble yourself thinking about feelings, partner,” he says. But it’s probably too late for both of them.
