“It was all a dream,” said Tidus as he stood facing the sunset.
“You had a bad dream?” asked Wakka as he walked up.
“No, I… am a bad dream.”
Wakka stood beside him. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I’m not sure I do either,” said Tidus.
“I guess trying to explain it to me would be a waste of time then,” said Wakka a little sadly.
“There was this blitzball game once,” said Tidus. “I got a little hurt; one of my own players accidentally scratched me. I can still feel it, the way it hurt just a tiny bit, and I can still see the blood floating away from me. And I remember the girl who came later with a bandage, and she gave me this mint drink…”
“Yeah?” asked Wakka in a confused tone.
“Well, it didn’t happen.”
“It was a dream,” said Wakka.
“It was as real as I am now,” said Tidus.
“Then it wasn’t.”
“Not that either. Or so the Fayth tell me. They dream... and that’s why I’m here. Why I’m anywhere.”
Wakka shook his head. “I knew it was a waste of time, trying to explain this to someone like me.” He slapped Tidus on the back. “You seem solid enough to me.”
“If you knew I was a dream, would I still be your friend?”
“Huh?” He was silent for a minute. “Well, that one day we went up to the Farplane, right? And I saw Chappu. Except Rikku says I really didn’t, that it’s just pyreflies.”
“Yeah, she told me that too.”
“See, she thinks I don’t understand her, or I’m just laughing at her because she’s Al Bhed. But really I don’t care. I remember Chappu, whether he’s on the Farplane like the Summoners say or it’s like Rikku says and I’m just looking at some pyreflies playing a game.”
“I’m not wherever Chappu is.”
Wakka sighed. “Yeah, I know, you’re here, except you’re not, or whatever the Fayth told you. But you’re talking to me right now, and I’m not asleep and I’m not dreaming. You have my sword, and you made me remember Chappu, and you’re still my friend. If that’s all right with you.”
“Yeah,” said Tidus, turning away from sunset and smiling a little. “It’s all right with me.”
