That first night afterward, Howl lay awake in bed for hours, not really seeing the spiders in their dance above him. Just listening to the rhythm of it. The beat of a heart.

He'd been grinning all night. Couldn't stop. It was becoming rather worrisome, really.

He had never realized that people could hear their own hearts, if they listened. That they could feel the weight of them. Or maybe they couldn't really, and he was just noticing because he'd lived with the lack of one for so long?

It was the strangest, most wonderful feeling, having a heart. It was astonishing that he hadn't realized that earlier, before he'd given it away to begin with. The feeling was almost like being drunk, only without the hangover. Or at least, he hoped there wasn't a hangover. Wonderful things, heartbeats.

He just wished he could figure out how people managed to sleep with this constant beating in their ears.
