[January 8] [Avatar: The Last Airbender] Green
Title: Green
Day/Theme: January 8/beyond the sphere of human vision, we met and embraced
Series: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Character/Pairing: Roku/Sozin
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 499
Sozin took a deep breath, filling his lungs with smoke and flame. Once more would be the end. His aging body would be gone and his soul would be free.
“Now you know how I felt,” said the voice from the corner.
Visions of fire disappeared as Sozin’s eyes flew open.
“You tortured me to death,” Roku continued as he approached the bed.
“It wasn’t my fault,” lied Sozin.
“I had a wife, children, grandchildren… they depended on me. And the world did as well.”
The Fire Lord tried to bury his head in the pillow. “I know.”
Roku moved his hand toward grey hair. “Yes, you know everything. And you never forgot about me.”
“How could I forget the Avatar?”
“Is that the part you remember?” Roku was laughing now.
“I remember firebending practice,” said Sozin hesitantly. He had dodged, evaded, struck out at the only person he wanted to be closer to.
“Before I learned all bending and surpassed you,” said Roku sharply.
“That didn’t matter,” said Sozin.
“You’re lying again. What else do you remember?”
“We used to argue,” said Sozin in a weak distant voice. “About the other nations.” All he had wanted was control and power… didn’t everyone want that really? Even the Avatar himself?
“Yes, you never understood balance. Let that be the memory of the friend you left to die, if you want it to be,” said Roku.
“I remember the trees,” said Sozin hesitantly, reaching out for Roku’s hand.
There were many parks in the capitol, and one small one had been abandoned. And that one was the best place for two young men who wanted to meet in the night.
“You said you would always protect me, and not only because I was the Avatar.”
Sozin tried to block it out from his mind, that small green space and all it meant. Roku’s breath against his chest, the feel of skin and flesh beneath his hands, the grass under his bare back.
“And you lied,” said Roku.
“I didn’t,” said Sozin. But he had of course, even to himself, as he let his body move with Roku’s even as his mind fought him.
“And now you have shown how much you hated me.”
He reached for Roku, as if he could somehow embrace him again now. “I never hated you.”
Roku rose from the bed and moved away. “And now you will never fool me again, if only because your latest betrayal left me dead.”
“You can’t get away from me. When I die, my soul will have yours,” the Fire Lord insisted.
But Roku only laughed. “The one thing you can never possess is the soul of the Avatar. By the time you are dead, I will be an Airbender.”
“And if I kill all the Airbenders?” But Roku was already fading into the shadows of the wall.
Sozin closed his eyes, knowing that he would only wake again in the morning, and that Roku would still be gone.
