Coming from Clow Reed, a smile was never just a smile; no one was ever like the other, and Yuuko had learned how to tell each one apart.

Whenever he was up to mischief, his smile resembled a quirky smirk, and he always seemed to hook one eyebrow for added effect. He grinned when he was being silly, just because he knew how much it annoyed the witch. A beam would be stamped on his face every time he felt truly content, and it was usually followed by an enthusiastic chuckle. His smile was a wistful one when he thought of the future, and it turned into an overall sad gesture much more frequently than she would like; his lips barely moved then, but even the most deceptive of changes were fully obvious to her.

There was one particular day, however, when she couldn’t quite read the nuances of his smile. It was a carefully blended mixture of the bitter and the sweet, with no way to find a predominant shade. There really was one for every occasion, she figured, and that final signature had been his mystery smile.

She only regretted never having a chance to decipher that one.
