It had become her game to hold her breath every time she crossed a bridge. She could pretend to be invisible then, smiling at the people who couldn’t see her. It made it a little easier to remember holding his arm.
Maybe Haku was here too, she had thought once, standing on a bridge and looking at her weak reflection in the river below. Just invisible, since his river was gone, and he had to hold his breath in the outside world.
The distant rumble of a train had made her look up, and she wished she still had the tickets Kamaji had given her. When she had been a child, she had just wanted to go home. She wondered if Haku felt the same longing for his riverbed. She wondered if having it filled in had left him feeling as empty as losing him had left her.
