With Zuko back in favour, Mai’s future seems assured once more. She knows of the court’s fickle nature, and she is not deceived by it. She does, however, trade in on her rising status to send for the court painter.
She makes her wants plain: a small, simple ink-painting. No colour and no embellishments. It is for her.
The court painter insists on making Zuko taller.
Mai, having spent too much time bullying the man into painting Zuko with his scar, knows when to retreat. And so she lets the man rearrange their heights to his satisfaction.
She sighs.
