Kimihiro Watanuki, spelled as in April first. There could never be a more appropriate name for that boy, for it not only made a clear reference to the day of his birth, but it also reflected a lot of who he was – an April’s fool.
For all his life, he had been a naïve kid, and so he was constantly made a fool of, be it through silly, childish pranks that rendered him infuriated for a while, or bigger, upfront lies that left permanent scars in his heart. It had happened once, twice, and just one too many times for him to keep track of, or to trouble himself with. After all, he did have the power to see – and be stalked by – the strange entities from the other world, and that just seemed like a more terrifying of an issue for him to be worried about.
When he met Yuuko, Watanuki thought she would be just another one to fool him, especially with her promise to get him rid of his unwanted abilities. I will grant your wish, she had said on that fateful day; in all truths, that one line just made her seem even more of a con-woman, but at the same time, there was something about her demeanor that also made him feel safe, somehow. Figuring there wasn’t much left to lose, he decided – or rather, felt compelled to – trust the witch and her methods, even though they weren’t exactly conventional by any means.
Time proved how right he was about his initial thoughts concerning Yuuko, and he was glad the optimistic bits were much more accurate than the rest. Surely, the witch often got on Watanuki’s nerves by pulling little pranks on him and teasing him about his relationship with Doumeki – the arrogant bastard who took his sweet time equally pestering the other boy - and sending both of them out on crazy errands and generally tormenting his everyday life, but it was crystal clear both, the witch and the archer always had his best interest at heart. He simply would rather not tell them how much he actually knew, otherwise all the fun would be lost.
And so he carried on, pretending to hate her frustratingly eccentric whims and his obnoxious company, as well as the whole ordeal that came with it. That was the daily routine that that he had secretly grown used to, and rather fond of, though it would soon come to a change. In fact, it only lasted until the day he learned the full truth, the one moment he realized those moments of false annoyance were but a waking dream – just a fleeting fancy that could only come true if he wished strong enough for it.
Only then he understood not all tricks were bad, as long as reality wasn’t the one playing them.
