“What was it like to die?” she asked suddenly. He snorted.

“Shouldn’t you be asking the cute little Maitlands?”

“They don’t remember. It took them a long time to even realize they were dead at all.” Lydia was curled up on the seat like a cat, knees pulled up to her chin and arms wrapped tightly around her legs. “Do you remember when you died?”

“1316 was the Famine. I was just a kid then. That’s where I learned to like food of the squirmy, crunchy nature.” He grinned toothily at her. She just nodded. A little disappointed that she hadn’t even made a face, he went on. “Then, there was the Plague. Messy business. That didn’t get me, though. The English were fighting the French, the Mongols were fighting the Japanese…”

His voice trailed off and he rubbed his bottom lip with the back of a knuckle. He was quiet long enough for her to lean forward and speak again.

“Did you die in the fighting?” she asked. He looked at her in silence for a moment, eyebrows furrowed and working his mouth like he was chewing on an invisible toothpick.

“Why are you asking?”

“Well…“ she faltered a little at the direct question. “I’m… curious… I guess.”

“It might be helpful,” he said, adopting a haughty accent and steepling his long, filthy fingers. “If you were to ask the question you are curious about…”

“What is it like to be dead?”

“Not that different, really.” He made a big show of straightening his lapels and playing with his cuffs. “Less limitations in some ways, more restrictions in others. More power.” He met her eyes again and his grin had reappeared. Then, he sighed. “Less freedom.”

“What are you not telling me?” Her dark eyes narrowed, reminding him again of a cat. He grinned, and chucked her on the chin.

"The part that you have to find out on your own.”
