Dec. 4th [xxxHOLiC] So Predictable
Day/Theme: Dec. 4th - When all else fails
Series: xxxHOLiC
Character/Pairing: Clow Reed x Yuuko Ichihara
Rating: PG
It had started just like any other evening they had shared – a whole lot of planning and working in the late afternoon, a well-deserved break once they were finished for the day and a nice seat by the fireplace, closely followed by ungodly amounts of liquor. As usual, they needed some time away from their own reality, and alcohol wasn’t only the fastest, but also the most effective passport to another realm.
In between sips of sake and alcohol-induced laughs, they discussed all sorts of amenities, as long as it wasn’t anywhere related to the inevitable future waiting ahead. One way or another, the original subject matter always managed to get lost along the way of their massive track of subsequent topics, and this time was no exception – although they were both surprised to see how far it had gone when Clow let a particular thought slip out loud.
Have you ever wondered what our lives would be like if we weren’t magic users?
Her initial reaction was to stare at the magician and see if she could find out whether he was being serious or not, but his face was unreadable. Yuuko finally figured his alcoholic euphoria was probably wearing off and that the following melancholy was gradually taking its place, for he would never ask the seemingly outrageous, had it been any different. She also decided her drunken stupor was definitely fading out as well, otherwise she would never consider answering such a question, as she eventually did.
They indulged into a long series of daydreams, ranging from what they would do for a living to what kind of people they would socialize with. It wasn’t easy for them to agree on what kind of job Clow could possibly get, seeing as he was quite skilled in just about every possible area of human knowledge; Yuuko, on the other hand, was easily defined as an overly eccentric lady whose absurdly extravagant lifestyle could only be sustained thanks to a very generous inheritance, and while it wasn’t too far from her current state, she couldn’t really see her own existence any other way.
That was when they realized things would basically remain the same, whether they were part of the magical world or not; Yuuko would still be the same social butterfly that rarely gets attached, while Clow would still be a rather reserved man who would hold dear the selective few acquaintances he chose. Magical users or not, whatever dimension it may be, they would still be almost exact opposites who shared little to nothing in common, yet understood each other like no one else would.
They were both very unique, in more ways than one.
“In the end, I suppose that wouldn’t make much of a difference,” He came to a conclusion. “Except that life would be considerably more fun, of course.”
“Because it would be unpredictable?”
“Only to an extent, yes,” At this point, he chuckled. “After all, even without Sight, I would still be able to tell we would end up together.”
She was almost afraid to ask, but out of sheer morbid curiosity, she did anyway. “What do you mean?”
“Well, judging from our personal experiences in the relationship department…” He trailed off, expecting her to catch his drift. Seeing as she didn’t, he added. “You know what they say, Yuuko. If all else fails, marry your best friend.”
There was a long moment of awkward silence and pointed staring on Yuuko’s behalf. Somewhere in her mind, the witch knew there was something more relevant that she was supposed to be scolding him for, though it simply escaped her senses by the time she got to speak again. She then settled for saying the only thing that did come to her, figuring she was either too drunk to put her thoughts together, or she was actually pleased at the idea – which only reinforced her initial theory that the excessive alcohol was affecting her reasoning.
“So you’re saying we already fail at life?”
“Not necessarily,” Even through his inebriated state, Clow was aware enough of his position, so he flashed her a winning smile. “Although, if you’re assuming such, then it means that you agree we would be married, were the circumstances any different.”
At his last remark, Yuuko hooked an eyebrow and pushed her half-empty sake cup away from her. She had definitely had too much already.
