She wanted, or rather, had always wanted, a child; someone to take care of, someone that would look up to her in their youth and become an adult to be proud of. That was all she asked for: a child and just that, no matter whether a boy or a girl – though she felt personally inclined to having a son. It was a simple dream, the one wish of mostly every woman in the world, and she was positive that it would eventually come true, even through her duties as a member of the ZAFT forces.
He wanted power, not simply over mankind, but over destiny itself. Coordinators were higher beings, he thought, but their full potential had yet to be properly explored – they could be so much more, if only the best path for them to follow could be determined upon birth. Having control over people’s lives through genetic engineering intervention was his goal, and a world without conflict, his ultimate dream. He was determined to grant that wish himself, even if a few sacrifices had to be made in the process.
And for his will to play with fate, they were inevitably going to part.
Talia wanted her child – her family – to lead a peaceful life, as she had witnessed far too many battles already, and all the horrors that came as a result. Her beloved ones deserved better, and she would make sure things would be so. Gilbert, on the other hand, would not think twice before facing resistance and engaging into furious combat, just for the sake of his dream. Nothing would stand in his way, and Talia certainly did not wish to be an obstacle.
She made a choice and left him, as it was the best course of action for the both of them. Dullindal was hell bent on carrying out his plans, and there would be no place in his life for her or the family she had wanted them to build, she believed. If only she knew.
Everything he dreamed of, every step he meticulously calculated, it was all for her; be it back when they were still together, or even after so many years had passed, it was all for her. He knew how much she loved peace, and so he wished to create a world without war, just so she could be happy. Their children would never have to face any hardships, as their future would be assured. It was all so obvious to him, so why couldn’t she see it as well as he did?
It was hopeless, he thought. That woman could never seem to understand that the Chairman only wanted the best for those he loved the most, and the future he pursued was the best humanity could ever wish for. All she needed to do was to ask him, and he would explain his point of view, over and over again if needed, until she was convinced – or until she changed his mind about it. He would do anything for her.
But she never asked him, and he never told her, either.
And it was only moments before his death – the one blissful time in which they were finally reunited and he could be in her arms again - that Gilbert Dullindal realized he had always possessed the power to change fate; their fate, at least.
If only he could have changed himself first.
