Character/Pairing: the cottage couple

In the beginning, they hadn’t told the children where the meat came from. They ate it up without any questions. Best to let them get a taste for it now, their father had said. Their mother had cried.
“You can’t mean to do it!” she wept.
“You would rather it be them in the larder?” he snapped. “If they’re like us, they’ll hunt with us. You can’t have both. We can make them like us, or we can risk waking up with their blood dried on our faces, and their flesh in our bellies.”
“No!” Their mother wailed. A fire lit in her eyes. Her tears wouldn’t last long in that blaze. “Not my babies!”
“We won’t lose them,” he growled. “We’ll keep them. Keep them fed, keep them safe.” His snarl softened and he hugged her. “It’ll be all right. Let them eat. Every bite will take them closer. When they’re old enough, it will be our bite that finishes it.”
“It can’t be right.” Her voice was muffled in his arms.
“It will be,” he promised. “You’ll see. Now, what’s for dessert?”
