She had promised herself it was over. This foolish infatuation had to stop. Who was she to think that someone like William-—she couldn’t even stop herself from thinking of him so familiarly! How could she make her heart do what her mind could not? But it was for the best. The best for both of them. If he could not be strong enough to realize the gravity of their situation, then she must be. She would have to take charge, keep everything in order. That was always something she always found comfort in, being able to keep things in their place, neat and tidy. It made her believe that being a maid was her true calling, not a profession forced upon by circumstance. She was good at her job. It was a part of who she was.
The problem lay in the fact that he was part of who she was as well.
(look at that! my first Emma drabble... and in less than ten minutes! gotta love what these challenges bring out in us)
