Erin did not think to hide her St. Christopher medal when she got on the bus, to her misfortune. The older woman seated behind Erin complimented the medal, at the same time touching the cross dangling from her own neck. Erin nodded and said nothing, turning back to her book.
Erin found herself unable to lie when the woman asked her what domination she was, and told her she an atheist with a father who through St. Christopher would protect any traveler wearing one of his medals. Her honesty cost her forty minutes of her life, listening to this woman's arguments, testimonies, and confessions of sins.
"'There is more in heaven and earth, sweetheart, then is dreamt in your philosophy.'", The woman said.
Erin snorted.
"You have no idea what my dreams are like."
