She finds it on a little street in Singapore, in one of those trashy curiosity-cum-tourist shops. And she can’t help but put her hands to her mouth to keep back her scream.
The stave of life.
It nestles snugly between a horrible reproduction vase and a vintage handbag.
She has dreams about him coming back, of course. She promised she would dream of him, after all, but this is too real, too immediate, and she wants to race from the shop and bury herself under the covers of her hotel bed.
Instead, she reaches out and cradles the stave close.
